This is part of the Fireproof Babies and Jaspertine collaboration project.
This collab started near the end of November, when I loaded Jaspertine’s entire “Delay volume 2” onto my player; put on the headphones; and sat down at the drums. It’s only been a month, but it seems like ancient history, now.
We worked on it off and on; more off than on; but at long last here it is. We hope you will find it interesting.

What Tipped? Facebook or Human...
The looming new year recently reminded me of something I read in June. It was a fact of human history with such a profound influence on the upcoming year that it may be the source of most of the changes of late and to come. For the first time ever, there will be more people in the world who live in cities than who don’t.
According to the United Nations Population Fund in June 2007, there are 3.3 billion people living in cities, and that number is expected to grow to 5 billion within 25 years.
Around the same time, Facebook saw unbelievable growth. Facebook had 12 million members in December 2006, and boasts around 60 million only a year later, ever climbing with an additional 250,000 new members daily and 65 billion monthly pageviews.
Proudly, my own city of Toronto is the second largest network with over one million members out of the roughly 2.5 million people living here.
There’s no doubt that Facebook has seen considerable growth in the past year, and that it will continue to. The question that hit me this morning, though, has the potential to flip my entire outlook on the world.
Did 2007 bring about the tipping point of Facebook, or urban human history as we know it? and.. what else will it mean for 2008?

Decimal Day (stsmork)
Decimal Day
Decimal Day a neve 1971. február 15-ének, ezen a napon vezették be Nagy-Britanniában (és vele párhuzamosan Írországban is) a decimális pénzrendszert. Ködös Albion lakói addig ugyanis egy mai szemmel nézve képtelenül bonyolult pénzrendszerrel szopatták magukat, illetve a hozzájuk látogató turistákat. Vessünk csak egy pillantást egy korabeli Twinings-plakát áraira: Sold in packets at 3/8, 2/6, 2/0, 1/10, 1/6 per lb.Mi a túró ez a sok tizedestört? A marhahús osztályozásának sikerén felbátorodva újabb hiánypótló post következik.

(A teljes méretű változat megtekinthető itt.)

AOL: Netscape Navigator is history
AOL: Netscape web browser is history
Netscape web browser has been part of a glorious history. It was the most popular browsers in the 1990s enabling people to surf the web.
Then Microsoft entered the scene with their Internet Explorer which was later bundled with their Windows operating system.
Times have changed and now Mozilla Firefox is working hard to make sure that the web browser market is no longer dominated by Internet Explorer.
And Netscape web browser is now going to be confined to the history itself.
AOL is the owners of Netscape and they have confirmed that Netscape browser would no longer be developed.
The development work on Netscape’s latest edition would stop in February next year. Tom Drapeau, lead developer for Netscape.com wrote in a blog post on this development: “AOL’s focus on transitioning to an ad-supported Web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be. Given AOL’s current business focus… we feel it’s the right time to end development of Netscape branded browsers, hand the reins fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox.”

ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions History...
Originally introduced in the ASP.NET Futures package, the history control in the ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions preview comes with a few nice additions. One of the updates is the ability to change the page title when adding a history point. This is important because without updating the title, the history list isn't very much help after a few updates. To illustrate the problem, here is what the history list in IE could look like after adding a few history points:

Because all the entries are the same, the user is unable to distinguish between them, leaving the list to be pretty unhelpful.
Adding history from the server
To take advantage of this from the server, you simply include the page title for the new history entry in the AddHistoryPoint method. This will update the page title when you add a history point but it will NOT update it for you when the user clicks the browser Back or Forward buttons. To accommodate for this, you have to set the page title as well in the Navigate event. Here is both the HTML and code-behind for this example:
<asp:ScriptManagerID="TheScriptManager"runat="server"EnableHistory="true"EnableStateHash="false"OnNavigate="TheScriptManager_Navigated"/><div><asp:UpdatePanelID="UpdatePanel1"runat="server"><ContentTemplate><asp:ButtonID="Button1"runat="server"Text="Button1"OnCommand="Button_OnCommand"CommandArgument="1"/> <asp:ButtonID="Button2"runat="server"Text="Button2"OnCommand="Button_OnCommand"CommandArgument="2"/> <asp:ButtonID="Button3"runat="server"Text="Button3"OnCommand="Button_OnCommand"CommandArgument="3"/><hr/><asp:LabelID="Label1"runat="server"/></ContentTemplate></asp:UpdatePanel></div>
protectedvoid Button_OnCommand(object sender, CommandEventArgs e) { string buttonState = e.CommandArgument.ToString(); Label1.Text = buttonState; string title = "Browser History " + buttonState; TheScriptManager.AddHistoryPoint("buttonState", buttonState, title); } protectedvoid TheScriptManager_Navigated(object sender, HistoryEventArgs e) { string buttonState = e.State["buttonState"]; Label1.Text = buttonState; Title = "Browser History " + buttonState; }
Now, the history list can be used more effectively and will look something like this:

Adding history from the client
The same steps apply to managing history on the client:
- Pass in the page title when adding a history point to update the list and title accordingly.
- Update the page title in the handler for the navigate event.
Here is the code for the client example:
<asp:ScriptManagerID="TheScriptManager"runat="server"EnableHistory="true"EnableStateHash="false"/><div><inputtype="button"value="button1"onclick="button_click(1);"/> <inputtype="button"value="button2"onclick="button_click(2);"/> <inputtype="button"value="button3"onclick="button_click(3);"/><hr/><spanid="results"/></div>
<script type="text/javascript"> Sys.Application.add_navigate(onNavigate); function onNavigate(sender, args){ var buttonNumber = args.get_state().pageState || ""; $get("results").innerHTML = buttonNumber; document.title = "Browser History " + buttonNumber; } function button_click(buttonNumber){ $get("results").innerHTML = buttonNumber; var historyPoint = { pageState : buttonNumber }; var title = "Browser History " + buttonNumber; Sys.Application.addHistoryPoint(historyPoint, title); } </script>
Hope someone finds this interesting. :)

Times Podcast Looks at New Year, 100...
The New York Times’ “Only In New York” podcast has a fun episode this week, looking at the newspaper’s coverage of the 1907 New Year’s Eve festivities, and predictions for 1908.
The famed mirrored ball that drops from the newspaper’s tower every New Year’s Eve at midnight debuted 100 years ago. Predictions that air travel would happen in the coming year came true with the Wright brothers’ flight. It was interesting to learn that the word “adolescence” was coined a century ago, and to hear about what stories made the front page in the New Year’s issue.
