nokia_values_500px.jpg

At the Open Source in Mobile conference Ari Jaaksi gave a talk about what Nokia is doing with Open Source and how they increasingly want to adopt the philosophies these communities represent. Nokia does not want to take code, fiddle with it to make it fit inside a product and let that be that, they want to contribute their changes upstream so that everyone in the future can benefit from what was accomplished.

GPL version 3 was talked about, the follies experienced when making the Webkit browsr in S60 devices, the "nightmare" that is known as the email client inside Maemo and how Nokia's new values were created with the same method and heart of the open source community.

A couple points were made that I feel every geek should know: Linux is not important, the mass market doesn't care. Open Source is not important, the mass market doesn't care. Nokia's goal is not 100% Open Source code, they need to make money too.

How to Record Live Performances...

Jon writes: “My friend and I like filming shows at local venues. After a while there are some things you seem to focus on while recording these. Here are my tips for recording live performances, shows and concerts.”

Equipment - Always prepare your equipment before hand. Nothing is worse than showing up on a scene without your necessary things. Here is a list of useful or necessary things you should bring along:

  • Camera(s) Always make sure you have properly packed your camera(s). Nothing is worse than showing up on a scene to find that your camera is damaged or even lost due to improper packing. Multiple cameras and cameramen(or camerawomen) are always recommended for any production, no matter how small. It’s always better to have a second angle to switch to if your shot gets disrupted or even too boring.
  • Batteries and tapes Having extra charged batteries and tapes are a must. Besides the people behind the project, the battery is the part giving any power to your operation. The tapes are your canvas (for now). Without either of these, you can’t record your event, and they are 100% necessary.
  • Tripod or Steadycam Nobody wants to watch a shaky video, even if the talent is amazing. Try a Tripod or Steadycam. Tripods tend to cause for a boring shot, but are more stable. A simple Steadycam, however, can be made easily and cost pennies. A cheap Steadycam like the one I made can serve as a Steadycam, a Bipod, a camera boom, and many more things. A ‘bar’ Steadycam, as I like to call it, is the perfect filming multitasker for the budget filmer, and will come in handy more than one would imagine.
  • Lights Like a shakey video, nobody wants to see a dark, unlit video. Even if you can’t find a professional, yet affordable, portable filming light, you can still bring along a compact halogen or such light. You would be amazed by how big of a difference a single light can make, never mind a second or third. I picked up 2 halogen lights for $10 each at a tool expo that came by town, and it works great, especially for its price and size. Just remember, anywhere there is a performer, there will probably be electricity, and someone more than willing to let you plug in to help film and promote their event.
  • Audio Many cameras have decent onboard mics, but sometimes that just isn’t enough. If you can get your hands on a different audio device, use it. Its always better to have too much instead of too little. A mini disc recorder works well, is compact, and is relevantly easy to transfer to a computer. If you can get a high quality digital recorder, that’s even better. They should have more recording options, allowing you to compensate for recording time, quality, whether or not you need phantom power, and many more. Also think about an audio source. It could be a soundboard from the attraction or venue, or just a quality condenser mic that you bring along. Bring everything into consideration for your audio.
  • Storage/Tote Always bring a proper means of storage for your equipment. Bring what you need, leave the rest in your car. Just because your bag can carry 250 lbs of equipment, doesn’t mean that you can. There is a difference between over packing and over preparing. It is clear which is good, and which is bad. Keeping your eye on your 4 extra tripods are going to be a bigger burden than if you didn’t have any tripod at all.
  • Crew Always pick a good crew that you can trust and know possess the skills you need. A crew doesn’t need to be 25 people, consisting of directors, boom operators, dolly pushers, etc. In most cases, you’re only going to need a director (who will probably work camera or audio as well), first, second, and third cameraman (fourth fifth etc depending on how many shots you have), audio technician, and someone to watch your stuff. A crew of 3 or 4 people is ideal for most low budget productions, and can be easily communicated with and transported. Does your car seat 4 people or more? I thought it might.
  • Extras This includs any useful lenses you have (love my fisheye), cables (a must), pen and paper (these have been handy for centuries), or anything you might need. Always keep these neatly packed and ready in case you might need them.

Once all of these things have been thought of and taken care of, you’re ready (hopefully) to get onto your show. When you’re at this event, there are a few tips I think might help you out:

  • Don’t be shy Talk to the talent, band, or whomever before the show and get their permission. Be sure they don’t mind if you try for a more creative shot in case it might ‘invade their space’.
  • Get creative After all, it is art! Don’t be afraid to ‘exploit’ your equipment for every fun shot you can. I use my Bipod Steadycam to get boom shots above guitarists, and I even tip it upside down and get an upside down shot from someones’ feet. It sounds like a bad idea, but you can always flip the image without losing any quality later, and the shot looks amazing and creative. Always try new things and new angles to film from. If it looks bad, you can always switch to a different camera. But, if it looks good… you will be switching to this shot.
  • Keep Safe No matter where you are, there are risks to you, and your equipment. If you’re filming in a studio, there is always the possibility of tripping on a cable or something falling over. At a rock concert, filming from the crowd means you could get bumped into by somebody, or even somebody coming out of the mosh. Always be aware of your surroundings. The only thing here worth more than your equipment, is you.
  • Setup Get ready as quickly and smoothly as you can. Keep organized… and out of the way. If you’re a nuance to the staff, they’re not going to let you film here. You must be respectful during setup and overall production.
  • Setting When preparing to film something, you must think about the size of the stage, crowd area, or any place you might use for your video, whether its going to be filmed, or going to be filmed from. Always take into consideration the size of the crowd, the size of the talent, and the sound levels as well.

MMORPG Etiquette

Being rude or offensive when playing an MMORPG can be fatal. You can get yourself removed and even “blacklisted”. Here are some tips sent in by a reader to help you behave yourself properly when playing.

  • Don’t treat other players as though they are “gods”. Just because a player is famous - or a Mod - doesn’t mean you should treat them differently than anyone else. After all, they are just players. Sending messages to your friends that someone famous is logged in is pointless, and just fills up the chat interface.
  • Trade Spamming is when in a bank, some people will come up to you and tell you to “buy! buy!”… without telling you what it is you should get! They also repeatedly click “trade” on you, which is extremely annoying. Just because a person is a high level, doesn’t mean they want to buy off of you.
  • Don’t say “I’ll own you”. In most MMORPGs, random people will come up to you and say “I’ll own you”. What’s the point in this? In my opinion, it’s a waste of time saying it, when you could instead be training, learning a skill, or talking to friends. Speaking of friends… no matter what kind of argument you may be in, dont’ say “my friend will own you”. That’s like saying “my mommy is going to beat you up”. It’s just lame.
  • What is up with pointless player killing? When you have no items on you, some players will pointlessly challenge you to a duel or just kill you flat out. Does this prove you are somehow the better gamer? No, it doesn’t. It just shows you’re rude, and care about nothing more than making yourself thinking your’re “bad”.
  • Don’t beg. Begging is the most degrading thing in MMORPGs. No one wats to give you free stuff… go earn it yourself. Sometimes, people say “Omg I got hacked!”. That just shows they weren’t careful with their items or passwords. Randomly going up to someone and just asking for their good items isn’t cool. I don’t care if it’s your birthday, don’t just expect me to give you the things I worked hard for!

Lessons Learned from two more...

My son and I conducted our third and fourth live webcasts over Ustream.tv today from the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport, about 30 miles outside of Washington D.C. Udvar-Hazy is an extension of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum which opened four years ago, and houses a wonderful array of aircraft and spacecraft in several enormous aircraft hangers. Our favorites in the collection were the Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress “Enola Gay”, the Space Shuttle Enterprise (STS-101 Orbiter,) the Corcorde, and the Mars Pathfinder Lander Prototype. This is an exceptional museum, and is certainly well worth visiting.

In our first webcast from the observation deck near the center’s entrance, we discussed the SR-71, the STS-101 Space Shuttle Enterprise, the P-40 and the F-4U aircraft.

In our second webcast from underneath the Concorde aircraft, we discussed the Concorde, a little about the Enola Gay B-29, and recapped many of the learning moments from the past week in Washington D.C. We switched roles for the second half of this webcast, and Alexander let me interview him. We also got some audio input from one of the security guards at the center.

For today’s webcasts over Ustream, we ratcheted down our video quality considerably (to 25% picture quality) and ratcheted up our audio quality (to 30 kHz.) This worked better over our 3G AT&T cell network connection than the higher video quality settings we’d used on Sunday from the Air and Space museum on the mall in Washington DC. The audio was not clipped and had a good, constant quality, but the video quality certainly leaves a lot to be desired. I think it is WONDERFUL Ustream allows this type of audio and video quality adjustment. Ideally, I think I’d like to experiment and use a higher level of video quality (at least 50% picture quality) but maintain the same level of audio quality. Whether or not bandwidth can support that is a local, context-driven question. Here are a few lessons learned from our four “remote field trip” Ustream.tv webcasts to date:

  1. CHARGE YOUR BATTERIES: Battery life for remote webcasts is essential. On both days of our webcasts from Washington DC this week, I failed to fully charge the laptop battery we were using. Ideally you want a full laptop battery, a spare battery, and a portable battery pack that can provide additional power to your laptop and possibly camcorder. An extra, charged camcorder battery would also come in handy.
  2. USE AN EXTERNAL CAMCORDER: For our webcasts this week, we used a small, handheld Sony digital camcorder. This video quality was far superior to the video quality obtainable from a built-in iSight camera. iSight cameras ARE great, but with an external DV camcorder the person serving as the webcast videographer can zoom in and out as needed on subjects, and frame video shots much more flexibly.
  3. USE A LONG FIREWIRE CABLE: A long firewire cable is essential when using an external DV camcorder. Although the laptop you are using for the remote webcast can be wireless / unplugged from electricity as well as a wired Internet connection, the camcorder must be plugged in.
  4. CONNECT WITH LOCAL VIDEO FIRST: Using a Macbook running OS 10.5.2 and Ustream.TV this week, we had repeated problems with our web browser crashing when the video source in Ustream was initially set to DV Video and DV audio. This happened in three different browsers: Safari, FireFox, and Flock. We do not know why this happened, but we did figure out a workaround. By connecting to Ustream FIRST with local video and audio settings, and THEN (after the connection was established) plugging in the external DV camcorder and switching the video and audio input sources, we were able to successfully webcast using the external DV camcorder.
  5. CHECK LOCAL BANDWIDTH: I like to use the Internet Frog Speed test website to check my upstream and downstream bandwidth from a particular location. I don’t know what the exact requirements for Ustream are, but generally anything less than 200 kbps is probably not going to work for a webcast or videoconference, from what I know and have experienced.
  6. TEST VARIOUS USTREAM QUALITY SETTINGS: The first two times we conducted a webcast over a cell phone data connection, the audio was clipped because the video quality we’d selected was too high for available bandwidth. By reducing video quality and increasing audio quality, we avoided this “audio clipping” problem. Experiment with different settings to find an optimal combination for your available bandwidth and purpose/needs.
  7. SCHEDULE IN ADVANCE: If possible, schedule the date(s) and time(s) of your webcast in advance, so others will know when they should be able to check in online to catch your broadcast. Remember folks around the world are in different time zones, so use a website like WorldTimeServer to provide a link to the exact time in GMT and/or a helpful link people can use to see the date/time for their local area.
  8. ANNOUNCE ON TWITTER: It can be helpful to announce your webcasts on Twitter to let others (who are following you on Twitter already) know about the availability of your webcast. Since people using Twitter at a particular time are generally interested in “live updates,” chances are good at least some of those folks will want to check out your live webcast and provide feedback - especially if you solicit it!
  9. CHECK LOCAL PORT SETTINGS IN ADVANCE: If you are using a hardwired ethernet connection or WiFi connection to the Internet, rather than a cell phone data connection, if possible check to see if Ustream is useable via that connection in advance of your scheduled conference. More hotels and other locations providing free WiFi are utilizing network configurations which prohibit streaming video, including the ports utilized by Ustream. If you can test for this functionality in advance, you may be able to save yourself headaches and disappointments later.
  10. BE READY WITH EXTRA QUESTIONS: The chat feature of Ustream is wonderful for soliciting questions from viewers, but depending on your Ustream channel settings users may be required to establish an account and log in to submit something. This can delay their abilities to submit text questions or comments, if they have not pre-registered with Ustream. For folks you will be inviting to the webcast, recommend that they pre-register with Ustream and login before your webcast begins.
  11. BRING EXTENSION CORDS: If you can conduct your entire webcast without electrical or ethernet wires, more power to you! (Literally!) Depending on time and the status of your respective batteries when you start your webcast, however, you may need to “plug in” one or more of your devices. Remember this can include three different things: Your digital camcorder and laptop to AC power, and your laptop to a wired ethernet connection (if applicable.) Bring an extension cord and power strip to insure you have enough electrical outlets if needed.

It was certainly fun to successfully conduct four separate live, remote webcasts over Ustream this week from Washington D.C. (See my March 9th post, “Partial victory web-casting from the Smithsonian” for the first two videos and initial lessons learned.) We learned a great deal, and I hope to apply this knowledge in the future to some “new media” grants I’d like to write to support students and teachers traveling to interesting destinations and utilizing a variety of new communication and publication technologies to both document their learning activities and share those experiences with other learners “back home” as well as around the world who are not able to physically join in the field trip learning with the group. My experiences in December 2007 helping facilitate successful videoconferences with Pearl Harbor survivors and veterans to Oklahoma learners planted the seed for this idea. Hopefully it will bear some fruit in the months to come! :-)

Shameless Updates

Things have been moving quite quickly here in Sarnia lately. It explains why I haven't been posting as much as I want and why when I do post it from what I prepared for somewhere else. Here is an update on where my time has been which may or may not effect you.

Rachel and I are now officially homeowners. I did some posts a while back on what I thought I should do, stay renting or get a mortgage and I guess we all know what we decided. Below is a picture of the house we are moving to at the end of the month.
The New House
The house is everything we wanted. It's only a few blocks from where we are now. Closer to the elementary school, across the street from the Inn of the Good Shepherd, and a bit closer to Rachel's work.
-----------------------
Epiphaneia has announced that we are skipping year 2008 and not doing a conference. But next year we are already well on our way. We have some speakers confirmed (which is top secret right now) and will be revealing them soon. March 21, 2009 is the date to book in your calendars. This is going to be a big one.
-----------------------
Ugly Lights, the movie that I am working on with some friends is coming together. The filming is all done and the editing process is well on their way. Check out the trailers below. We are hoping to premiere it the end of May at Imperial Theatre here in Sarnia. I edited the second trailer.

-----------------------
My dad is starting up a port-potty business and I'm trying to help him brand it and get it off it's feet. The website is here and you can see the logo; it's called Sarnia Sanitation. If you are in the area and you need portable toilets, let me know and I'll get you a great deal.
-----------------------
I'm reading this book right now. I can't help but look at my neighbours (usa) and my own country entirely different.
-----------------------
Remember when we ran that Sarnia Short Film Festival a while back? Well the local TV station did a 30 minute show of the top films with Joe and I introducing each one. We are now local TV stars that make it on TV a couple times a week when the ratings are at their best.
-----------------------
Rachel and I are going to South Africa in August for a month, and we are trying to raise some funds to help us get there. If you can spare any extra money or if you didn't tithe this week and feel guilty, we'd love any donation. You can send it to paypal@storyboardsolutions.com, and if you want a tax receipt, e-mail me: and I'll fill you in on how it works.

Which of these four figures is not a polygon? Explain your answer.

If you chose A because it has a curved edge, congratulations. You correctly answered a sample tenth grade question from the Washington Assessment of Student Learning exam. Commonly known as the WASL, all Washington State tenth graders are taking the reading and writing portions of the exam this week. And the stakes are high. They must pass in order to graduate.

This hour on Weekday: what's up with the WASL? The WASL's five year testing contract is set to expire this fall. Is the test working? Should it be changed? Is it too long? Or too short? Should we offer it in other languages? Is the WASL testing what matters?

I Have An Idea For A Business! Now What?

Bigg Challenge
One of our listeners, David, e-mailed us because he has an idea for a business, but doesn’t know what to do next. He wants some direction to get started.

Bigg Advice
Congratulations, David! You have a good IDEA. Now you need to know if it’s a good opportunity. Answer these four questions:

#1 – Is there a market?
Are there enough buyers? Here are a few of the many ways to know:

  • Check with relevant trade associations.
  • Talk to business owners who won’t be your competitors.
  • Conduct surveys – on the street, via phone, through e-mail.

Keep in mind that you’ll never know for sure – what people SAY they will do isn’t necessarily what they WILL do.

Some markets are too bigg. Others are too small. You want one that’s just right! Bigg markets attract bigg competitors. They’re tough to compete against. Small markets may not offer enough opportunity. You’ll waste resources for very little upside.

#2 – Is the market accessible?
Can you reach your prospects? The best idea in the world is no good if you can’t access your prospects. Here are few examples:

  • Publications they regularly read
  • Internet sites they visit frequently
  • Search terms they use
  • Specialty stores where they shop

#3 – Who’s your competition?
Prospective entrepreneurs often think that they won’t have any competition. Well, everybody has competition. If you think you don’t, think again.

A simple example

Let’s say you want to start a carpet cleaning business. Obviously, you can look online or in the phone book to identify your competitors.

But one competitor isn’t so obvious. A number of people go to the store, rent the equipment, and do it themselves. They are competitors, too.

Another thing to think about is substitutions. Every time one of your potential customers replaces their carpet with hardwood floors or tile, they don’t need you!

How bigg are your competitors? Ideally, the industry is highly fragmented with a lot of little companies. If it is dominated by one or two major players, you’ll need to compete around them.

#4 – Will it provide a sufficient return?
Estimate how much money you can make. Divide that by how much money it will take to start. That’s your return.

Where to find the numbers

Say you want to start a retail store. Here are four ways to get numbers:

#1 – Publications that gather industry data (available at your local library).

#2 – Public companies in a similar industry

#3 – Franchises with a related concept

#4 – Business owners in non-competing markets

Your return has to be enough, given all the other opportunities, to justify the investment. Otherwise, you won’t attract the capital you need.

Thanks, David for sharing your bigg challenge. We hope this helps you get started!

What's your bigg challenge? E-mail us: bigginfo@biggsuccess.com

SXSW Movie Trailer: Super High Me

August 03, 2008

super-high-me.jpg

What would happen to your brain and body if you smoked good weed for 30 days straight? That is the premise of comedian Doug Benson’s Morgan Spurlock-one-upping documentary Super High Me. The film is currently showing at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, and while Peter hasn’t seen it, reviews thus far have been favorable, with many expressing respect for the extensive tests Benson puts himself through. He even, uh, went weed-sober for 30 days before the wake-and-bake trials started.

But the trailer? Well, the trailer is just bongs, smoke clouds, nuggets, stoned delays, laughing, and there’s a cameo by fellow comedian Brian Posehn. Oh, and there’s a little medical marijuana debate in there too for good measure. If you’re wondering about the outcome, Benson’s SAT scores were higher stoned, his sperm count actually rose during his month-long weedathon, his psychic abilities were higher stoned, and I’m guessing he continues to toke up regularly. The downside? He gained eight pounds and made a doc on the cheap that practically forces lazy critics to write “this film deserves the good buzz, no pun intended.”

Super High Me, starring Doug Benson, Brian Posehn, Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis and Bob Odenkirk is currently on the festival circuit and will be available on Netflix in June ‘08.

Discuss: Should weed be legalized? What is the greatest stoner movie of all time? What other vices would make for good 30-day docs? Don’t watch There Will Be Blood stoned. Do any Slashfilm Cali readers have a medmar prescription?

I don’t mind PR agents, really. There are some - and their approaches - that I DO mind. There’s a fine line that a lot of PR people don’t realize is there. I’m now being asked by a journalist to give my thoughts about PR and their direct role within the Blogging the community. The question, specifically is “Is it reasonable for PRs to target the Blogging community?”.

A blog in itself isn’t a “community”. There are subsets of types of blogs and genres. They themselves are communities. The bottom line is that I am not a journalist. I’m a columnist, yes. I’m a blogger. I’m a video caster. I help other people blog. I don’t know how you’d classify me. The one thing I am is that I”m not a media agency. I’m just someone who enjoys Technology.

I think it’s reasonable for PR people to contact bloggers, yes… with these five things in mind.

  • Be transparent, and expect transparency in return. Don’t email us pretending you’re someone you’re not. Be up front, and honest about what you’re after. You’ll have a much better shot at getting us on your side or promoting your product(s) and services.
  • Don’t ask for links. It’s rude to just ask us to give you a link. If I’m interested, I’ll talk about it, and link to it. But for you to just send me a message and ask me to “embed this link”… is just not cool.
  • Be proactive with review links or products. The only way to really get me to talk about your item(s) is to put something in my hand. Give me something to review. Send me coupons or savings I can pass along to my community.
  • Know who they are, and why they matter. Don’t just send out some generic email. Make sure you put something into your approach that shows you really DO read my blog, don’t just state it.
  • Keep it short and sweet. No. Press. Releases. Scan… delete. Software, if you don’t offer me a review code, then it’s deleted. If it’s hardware without a review sample… delete. Maybe you should post your press releases on Twitter.

FS #201: Chicago 10 / Flower of My...

July 31, 2008
posted by admin

March 14: The boys are back after a week off and ready to blow off some steam, fight the man, and storm the old Chicago Amphitheatre alongside Abbie Hoffman, Rennie Davis and David Dellinger in director Brett Morgen's latest kaleidoscopic gonzo-documentary "Chicago 10." Featuring the vocal talents of Hank Azaria, Mark Ruffalo and Jeffrey Wright, the film chronicles the 1968 Democratic National Convention riots and subsequent trial of its alleged instigators -- inspiring Matty and Adam to share their Top 5 '60s Movies (movies set in the '60s, not from the '60s).

Also on the show: Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre and Filmspotting's Pedro Almodóvar Marathon launches with a review of 1996's "The Flower of My Secret."

Music by Wilder Embry from his new album "Squander."

NOTES/CORRECTIONS
- Brett Morgen was kind enough to respond to my follow-up query about the use of music in "Chicago 10." Here is what he had to say about the use of music: "There was no music added or cut since Sundance and all the cues are the same." So there you have it. Frustrating indeed to not be able to account for the difference in my perception of the music from then to now. That said, I'm starting to realize that your festival experience can often be very different from your non-festival one.

- Turns out we were right the first time... Josh Brolin is playing Dubya in Oliver Stone's upcoming "Bush," not Bush 41. Apparently IMDb has the credit incorrect.

- 'IKEA' Knightley and Orlando 'Bland' are names popularized by the BBC's Mark Kermode.

- During our Almodóvar discussion, we pronounced Leo's name (short for Leocadia) as LEE-oh. It should have been LAY-oh. We are Midwestern hicks, after all; but in our defense, watch the movie and you barely hear the distinction when the characters pronounce the main characters name.

- My apologies to Zach in Atlanta. I misspoke when saying that he left a voicemail thanking Matty for introducing him to "After the Wedding" and "This Is England." It was actually "England" and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley."

Episode 110 - Shaq Tumbles,...

Today The Girls are coming to you live from a place of darkness - mentally and physically - in the heart of the Dead Zone on Mt. Everest. If you are a loyal listener to the show, and rest assured there are millions, you know that we do not advocate climbing Mt. Everest if you need to enlist a sherpa or seven to help you get there. So you should not be surprised that we think it is a supreme bonehead move to take school children who - get this - have never climbed before and ARE BLIND up a sheet of ice that has claimed many lives. At least the teacher had more sense than the guide, Erik Weihenmayer (who is also blind and has summited) who moaned, "I did not come 7500 miles to take these kids up halfway!" Nuff said. So off we go to the eternal happy land that is all things sports. Goodell has decided it's time to crack down on spying. That's right Roger, the first step is admitting you have a problem. Well done. Step two - suspend Bill Belichick. We can't wait to see what Randy Moss does when that happens. Now we lay in wait for Matt "anybody got a blender blade?" Walsh. While Federer was nursing Mono, a Fantoo favorite, John Daly, was whooping it up with the Hooters Girls...DURING the PODS Championship! Okay, so it was a rain delay, and it is golf. We understand the pull of hops and barley better than the average girl, but we can restrain ourselves...sometimes. John, you're good for golf, you're good for beer. But to be good to both you have to perform. Please don't let us down. Golf needs you to balance out all that is Tiger. Over in NASCAR, Tiregate burns like rubber on the heels of Tony Stewart's somewhat, okay, totally, personal attack on Goodyear. Fear not, they'll work it out, grill a buzzard and get on with it. The season has been too much fun so far to get all bully on someone. Unless that's what we actually love about racing. We'll get back to you on that. The heat of Spring Training beckons so we open our MLB coverage with this week's Rookie Look. Evan Longoria (no typo there, much to his dismay) is lighting it up for the Tampa Rays. Japan may have needed us in the past, but they don't need our baseball. And certainly not on opening day. Is nothing sacred? So, Bud Selig sees no reason to read the recently released grand jury testimony of Barry Bonds? Wait, let's see if we get this straight. Selig sees no reason to read the testimony of the current home run king regarding his alleged (HAHAHAHAHAHA) abuse of steroids? Maybe because he already KNOWS ALL ABOUT IT? But the steroid era is about to end thanks to oil. Now we don't mind paying so much at the pump because Hydropyrolysis is coming to a urinal near you. Finally, the test that can clean up sports. We wonder who in the league will try and bury this one. We leave roids behind to spend some time in the paint where Shaq does his best impersonation of a Russian tumbler, Kobe applauds the larceny that landed Pau Gasol in his court, and the Rockets prove that what the New England Patriots did isn't all that amazing. March Madness may be around the corner, but it will be hard to overshadow the NBA this year, and The Girls couldn't be more thrilled. Over on the ice we take you back to a moment so hockey, so brilliant, so 'that's what you get when you try to insert yourself into the game'...and then we (well, one of us) ridicule Cinderfella again for, you guessed it, his groin. UGGGHHH. But, we leave the rink on a high note as THE stadium (Yankee Stadium) decides it might leave the world on the back of a shoot out. Speaking of being on your back (okay, that was a stretch) we close this week's podcast gold with another IT HAS TO BE SAID which strongly urges that one not participate in that which one is trying to eradicate. So grab your Number 9, your friend Ray, and your best set of tires...it's time to talk sports with The Girls!

What Do You Measure About Your Online...

You've got your online empire or you are growing one, what do you measure and how do you do it?

Excel or open office is the faithful standby. Create your charts and graphs and calculations. However I found when I use excel I don't look at the numbers as much as I should.

Even when using excel, what do you measure?

Unique visitors?

Conversions?

Subscribers?

Total Site Earnings?

Feed Subscribers?

Indexed pages in google?

Comment count?

What?

The big board

bigboard.jpgMy new way of tracking is a giant poster board I put together that shows my 50 top sites.

I've set an earnings goal for each site and the only the board tracks is if the sites met the goal or not.

If no, then I'll go look at the other stats and trends to determine the problem.

That's how I'm doing it this month, how are you doing it?

Things Measured Get Better

Not only do I have the goal of trying to improve my sites by tracking, there is also a practical reason, I can see problems better.

Once you get a dozen or a few sites there might be some you dont' visit for awhile. If you aren't tracking them somehow, they could be dead and you'd never know it. Recently I deleted a database that 2 sites I didn't know used the database and the sites died. Woops.

Now that I right that I'm thinking maybe once a month measuring is needed.

Your thoughts

What do you measure and how do you do it? And how often?

CNN Admits It Should Have Vetted...

Houston Chronicle:

CNN said it shouldn’t have used a former U.S. attorney who quit his job after allegedly biting a stripper as an analyst about New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s prostitution scandal.

No mention of Kendall Coffey’s past was made when anchor Tony Harris interviewed him Tuesday on the legal questions surrounding Spitzer’s case. Coffey quit his job in May 1996 after being accused of biting a topless dancer on the arm during a visit to an adult club after losing a big drug case.

Coffey talked on CNN about what kind of charges the New York governor could face. Spitzer is accused of having a high-priced call girl visit his hotel room during a visit to Washington last month.

While Coffey’s past is known to CNN’s booking department, it wasn’t to the person who set up Harris’ segment. CNN spokesman Nigel Pritchard blamed a “miscommunication.”

“Coffey has been a guest on CNN in the past but was probably not the right one for this story,” Pritchard said.

Oopsie! It’s a little like having Bill “Phone sex with a loofah” O’Reilly lecture you about moral rectitude.

Sleep Tips

Tom from England writes: “A lot of people at school in the morning arrive with their eyes half closed and are complaining of how miserable they are, so I made this top 5 list (not just for teenagers) about how to get the most out of sleep.”

  • Stick to a schedule Make sure you go to bed and wake up at more or less the same time every day, even on weekends. This will prevent interference with your ‘biological clock’, and your body will thrive on its new sleeping routine. I may also note that you will rely less and less on alarm clocks.
  • Sleep in darkness It may seem like common sense, but letting even a small amount of light into your room will severely disrupt you when you try to get to sleep. It is also good to know that when waking up in the morning, you should do so with bright lights… especially if you find it hard getting out of bed.
  • Watch what you eat and drink Going to bed on a full stomach (or an empty one) is not good. If you are having a meal, wait at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This is because your body cannot digest food well when you are asleep. It’s also the same with tea or coffee, Coca Cola etc. Caffeine takes at least 8 hours to get out of your system and can keep you awake in bed.
  • Sleep cool There is nothing worse than a hot bed. Open a window or use thinner sheets. You may feel you are lying in bed forever before you can get to sleep when your bed is like an oven.
  • Get as much sleep as possible. Sleeping for short amounts of time, such as around 6 hours, can lead to stress. A good amount is around 8 hours.
