LONDON: Senior US officials have helped Pakistan and other states to steal nuclear weapons secrets, a whistlebloweer has claimed.Intercepted communications showed former ISI chief Mahmoud Ahmad and his colleagues stationed in Washington were in constant contact with attaches in the Turkish embassy, according to The Sunday Times.Sibel Edmonds, a 37-year-old former Turkish language translator for the FBI, listened into hundreds of sensitive intercepted conversations while based at the agency's Washington field office, it said. She approached the newspaper last month after reading about an Al-Qaida terrorist who had revealed his role in training some of the 9/11 hijackers while he was in Turkey.Edmonds described how foreign intelligence agents had enlisted the support of US officials to acquire a network of moles in sensitive military and nuclear institutions.According to Edmonds, she heard evidence that one well-known senior official in the US State Department was being paid by Turkish agents in Washington who were selling the information on to black market buyers, including Pakistan.Intelligence analysts said that members of the ISI were close to al-Qaeda before and after the 9/11 attacks on the US. Ahmad was accused of sanctioning a 100,000 dollars wire payment to Mohammed Atta, one of the 9/11 hijackers, immediately before the attacks, the report said. The newspaper claimed that it knew the name of the official, who has held a series of top government posts, but he strongly denies the claims.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/US_officials_helped_Pak_steal_nuke_secrets_Report/articleshow/2678687.cms

I spent Christmas and New Years at my Uncle and Aunty's house in Washington this year and I had a great time. I spent tons of time with my cousins, and the rest of the family and had more fun over those two weeks than I have in the past couple years. Now I'm back home (I'm 21 living at home with parents and siblings while I'm in college) and I'm kind of sad. I don't really have any friends, and I'm missing having people to do stuff with (my cousins). All my life I've relied on family to fill the roles of friends, but now all my cousins are growning up, and having lives of their own (they have boyfriends and girlfriends, have moved, have made "real" friends). I'm just left behind :(

For someone with this kind of following bringing all this new attention to the pork barreling, lavish gifts, poor attendance records and all the other things these crooks do once elected. Al-Qaida's American seeks Bush attacks By ANNA JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer Sunday, January 6, 2008CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida's American spokesman called on the terror network's fighters to greet President Bush with "bombs and booby-trapped vehicles" when he visits the Middle East later this week, according to a video posted Sunday. The rhetoric-packed video also featured the California-born Adam Gadahn tearing up his U.S. passport as part of a "symbolic" protest against Washington and marked the terror network's first message of 2008.(Is it really a good idea to keep the world apprised of Bush's itinerary? For whatever the reason, we never learn about his (or Condoleeza's) visits to Iraq until AFTER he(she) arrives there. Why then, are we made aware of when he is visiting other Middle Eastern countries?)

High Court Hears Lethal Injection CaseBy MARK SHERMAN,APPosted: 2008-01-07 19:14:12Filed Under: Crime News, Law News, Nation NewsWASHINGTON (Jan. 7) - The Supreme Court appeared divided Monday over whether the drugs commonly injected to execute prisoners risk causing excruciating pain in violation of the Constitution.Several justices indicated a willingness to preserve the three-drug cocktail that is authorized by three dozen states that allow executions. Such a decision would allow lethal injections, on hold since late September, to resume quickly.Justice Antonin Scalia said states have been careful to adopt procedures that do not seek to inflict pain and should not be barred from carrying out executions even if prison officials sometimes make mistakes in administering drugs. "There is no painless requirement" in the Constitution, Scalia said. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito also indicated their support for the states' procedures.Other members of the court, who have raised questions about lethal injection in the past, said they are bothered by the procedures used in Kentucky and elsewhere in which three drugs are administered in succession to knock out, paralyze and kill prisoners. The argument against the three-drug protocol is that if the initial anesthetic does not take hold, a third drug that stops the heart can cause excruciating pain. The second drug, meanwhile, paralyzes the prisoner, rendering him unable to express his discomfort."I'm terribly troubled by the fact that the second drug is what seems to cause all the risk of excruciating pain, and seems to be almost totally unnecessary," said Justice John Paul Stevens.Justice Anthony Kennedy, who often plays a decisive role on the closely divided court, gave little indication of his views. The case before the court comes from Kentucky, in which two death row inmates are not asking to be spared execution or death by injection. Instead, they want the court to order a switch to a single drug, a barbiturate, that causes no pain and can be given in a large enough dose to cause death. At the very least, they are asking for tighter controls on the three-drug process to ensure that the anesthetic is given properly. A decision should come by late June.

Economy Trumps Iraq as Election IssueBy Jeff Mason,ReutersPosted: 2008-01-05 10:50:14Filed Under: Elections NewsWASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Iraq war, once the key issue in the U.S. presidential election, is taking a back seat to the economy as voters fret over a possible recession and consider the improving security situation in Baghdad.Polls in Iowa, the state that kicked off the process for choosing a president on Thursday, showed people pushing the war lower on their list of concerns after the surge in U.S. troops helped calm conditions in the country and a deteriorating economic situation at home drew focus to domestic woes."The entrance polls in Iowa certainly suggested that Iraq has receded ... as the central issue in the campaign, partly because the 'surge' is working and fatalities are down, and partly because the economy is getting worse," said David Gergen, a former adviser to Republican and Democratic presidents."The latest numbers on jobs that came out (on Friday) ... are being interpreted by investors as yet another sign we may be heading toward a recession," he told Reuters. But political analysts said who benefits most could be a toss-up, with out-of-power Democrats possibly helped by a poor economy, and Republicans may be given a boost from improvements in Iraq.

According to a 2004 Washington Post article, the Prius and other hybrid cars are often seen as fashion statements by their owners.People want others to *know* that they're driving a hybrid - saving the earth and looking d*mn trendy while doing it.Uhm, I might be mistaken...but why should saving the earth be a fashion statement??Instead of making hybrids look trendy and hip, shouldn't they look like just another car - not everyone wants to buy something so odd looking. It's the hybrid technology that is the important thing, NOT that it looks cool or because it's endorsed by celebrities.Looking good to your neighbors should not be a motivation for saving our planet...nor should it even be something to brag about...and if that's what you do, then you've got the wrong idea.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/art...Yes, of course it's a good intention...but my question is...isn't this the wrong idea? Saving the earth shouldn't be portrayed as 'trendy' or something to do so you can get a new toy car.

Resolved Question: Why can't Obama...

September 11, 2008

Obama's Trouble With The TruthBy Richard CohenJohn Edwards lied about the cost of his haircuts. Fred Thompson lied about lobbying for a pro-choice outfit. John McCain insists that the U.S. was founded as a "Christian nation." Mitt Romney concocted the story about how his father marched with Martin Luther King Jr. And Rudy Giuliani is one-man fib machine -- everything from why he had to provide police protection for his then-mistress to the cure rates for prostate cancer in Britain. Yet it is something Barack Obama said that bothers me most of all because Obama is a new kind of politician. He is supposed to be coolly authentic. What concerns me is the lie or fib or misstatement -- call it what you want -- that involves Obama's assertion that more young black males are in prison than in college. It is a shocking statistic -- and it is wrong. But when The Washington Post's lonesome but formidable truth squad, Michael Dobbs, brought this to the attention of the Obama campaign, he not only got the brush-off but the assertion was later repeated. You can appreciate the usefulness of this false claim. It says something compelling about the plight of young, black males that is essentially true -- their condition amounts to a calamity and something has to be done. But this particular comparison is wrong, and Obama must know it by now. Ought to be true is not the same as true. After all, it ought to be true that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. It ought to be true that he had ties with Osama bin Laden. It ought to be true that aluminum tubes were intended for a nuclear weapons program and it ought to be true, really, that none of this mattered since what mattered most of all was a larger truth: Saddam had to go and the Middle East had to be urban renewed for the sake of democracy. In a recent provocative essay for The New Republic's Web site, Princeton historian Sean Wilentz coined the phrase "the delusional style in American punditry." He applied it to Obama's fans in the American press. His argument is that certain journalists are so enthralled by the sheer Obamaness of Obama that they are willing to overlook everything they know about the fundamental value of experience. In this regard, Wilentz cites a Boston Globe editorial that used Obama's memoir "Dreams From My Father" to extol Obama's real-life experiences. Wilentz is not persuaded. To him, the book is "not exactly a portrait of sterling honesty or authenticity."I and others have written that Obama -- as he himself says in the introduction -- invented composite characters and altered chronology. But as The Chicago Tribune also reported, some of the events Obama passionately details seem not to have happened at all. Maybe his memory played tricks on him. Mine sure does. But I am not running for president. And if I were, I'd pay particular attention to the truth -- to the nagging facts that sometimes get in the way of a good story. After all, it is not only Iraq that has been destroyed in the last several years -- so has whatever trust the American people still had in their government. I have been at this game a long time, but for sheer manipulation of the facts, for a fudging of the truth, for the occasional bald lie, the Bush administration takes the cake. Cheney and truth cannot be found in the same sentence. So the cavalier dismissal of Dobbs, the Post's truth-hunter, is troubling. Since he writes that the Obama campaign would not comment, it is reasonable to assume that it doesn't give a damn -- that this is a little matter and the candidate is engaged in something grand. The phony statistic is, in its way, like a composite. There's a larger truth here, get it?No. When John McCain sticks to his insistence that the Constitution established the United States as a "Christian nation," I don't like it, but I know McCain and I know his character. He has a record in public life going back, essentially, to 1967 when he was shot down over Vietnam and repeatedly tortured by his captors. Back in 2000, I might have gotten a bit "delusional" over him, but I had my reasons.I am a bit enamored with Obama as well. But the man's public record is thin and the glow from him is distracting and my intuition tells me that sometimes intuition is no substitute for experience. So, I'll sit back and watch some more -- and wait to see if Obama or anyone in his campaign calls back Dobbs and corrects the record. "Facts are stubborn things," John Adams once said. So, to our regret, we keep learning the hard way.

Others say they support "comprehensive Immigration Reform" but that includes amnesty for those here. The Washington Post has a place where people can voice their opinions. Everyone needs to go to washingtonpost.com and push for enforcement of our current immigration laws, locating and deporting the illegal aliens, and securing our borders. AS IMPORTANT; prosecute those who offer incentives to the illegal aliens to come to our country (as Giuliani did and Huckabee did). Can we force our government to comply with the law? Stomach Flu Spread By Contaminated Computer KeyboardsPosted: 2008-01-04 16:52:31Filed Under: Health, Healthy LivingThe highly contagious norovirus, often called the stomach flu, can be passed from one person to another through contact with commonly shared items such as computer keyboards and computer mice, U.S. health officials report. The virus, which is common in winter and is the most frequent cause of outbreaks of vomiting and diarrhea in the United States, is often contracted in schools, at work and on cruise ships. On Thursday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on a norovirus outbreak at a Washington, D.C., elementary school last February in which some of the victims picked up the virus from contaminated computer equipment."There is evidence that shared objects and surfaces help transmit disease," said Dr. Shua Chai, a CDC epidemiologist and co-author of the report, published in the Jan. 4 issue of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report."This is the first time that we have demonstrated that keyboards and computer mice can be a source of transmission of norovirus," he added.Of the 314 students and 66 staffers at the D.C. school, 103 came down with the illness -- 79 students and 24 staff members. To find the sources of contamination, samples were taken from various surfaces around the school. In one first-grade classroom, a computer mouse and keyboard tested positive for norovirus, according to the report.

It's the hybrid technology that is the important thing, NOT that it looks cool or because it's endorsed by celebrities.Looking good to your neighbors should not be a motivation for saving our planet...nor should it even be something to brag about...and if that's what you do, then you've got the wrong idea.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24832-2004Aug22.html

The Results Are In ... Oh, By the Way, the Iraqis Don't Really Want UsWILLIAM BLUMJanuary 14, 2008Did you miss this? It should have been the lead story in every newspaper and radio and TV program in America. In the Washington Post it was on page 14. In virtually all of the rest of the media it was on page zero, channel zero, 0000 AM or 00.0 FM. The US military in Iraq hired firms to conduct focus groups amongst a cross section of the population. A summary report of the findings was obtained by the Post. Here are some of the highlights of the report as disclosed by the newspaper: * Until the March 2003 US occupation Sunnis and Shiites coexisted peacefully. * Iraqis of all sectarian and ethnic groups believe that the US military invasion is the primary root of the violent differences among them. * After the United States leaves Iraq, national reconciliation will happen "naturally."* A sense of "optimistic possibility permeated all focus groups ... and far more commonalities than differences are found among these seemingly diverse groups of Iraqis."* Dividing Iraq into three states would hinder national reconciliation. (Only the Kurds did not reject this option.) * Most would describe the negative elements of life in Iraq as beginning with the US occupation. * Few mentioned Saddam Hussein as a cause of their problems, which the report described as an important finding, implying that "the current strife in Iraq seems to have totally eclipsed any agonies or grievances many Iraqis would have incurred from the past regime, which lasted for nearly four decades -- as opposed to the current conflict, which has lasted for five years."The Washington Post added this note: "Outside of the military, some of the most widespread polling in Iraq has been done by D3 Systems, a Virginia-based company that maintains offices in each of Iraq's 18 provinces. Its most recent publicly released surveys, conducted in September for several news media organizations, showed the same widespread Iraqi belief voiced by the military's focus groups: that a U.S. departure will make things better. A State Department poll in September 2006 reported a similar finding."This just in: The US has found the perfect way to counteract such foolish attitudes of the Iraqi people. On January 10, the Associated Press reported: "U.S. bombers and jet fighters unleashed 40,000 pounds of explosives on the southern outskirts of Baghdad within 10 minutes Thursday in one of the biggest air strikes of the war, flattening what the military called safe havens for al-Qaida in Iraq." There was no mention of whether the planes had also dropped pamphlets saying: "We bomb you because we care about you."

I'm 17 and I live in Washington State. I posted this question but I wasn't as thorough as I should have been. My family doesn't like my girlfriend. It was a misconception that I was the mother in my last thread. I'm terrified that they're going to legally keep me from her over the next eight months and keep me from my child's birth. I can't stand the thought that they'll gain custody of my child from my girlfriend. We don't, however, use illegal drugs, drink, and we'd kill anyone who hurt our baby in anyway including eachother. I desperatley need to know what my parents can do and what I can do to fight them. PLEASE HELP and THANKS!!!!True, I didn't mean "Kill" at all. Very terrible wording. What I ment of course is that we will not tolerate anyones hands being put on our child in a hurtful manner as any parents. I'm sure ya'll knew this but I'm deeply sorry if it was misinterpreted and takin in offense. My father, who had been my best friend for my 17 years here, apparenly told my sister that if my gf gets pregnant he won't talk to me anymore. I have my own opionions and as much as that hurts thats his choice. I used to have straight A's back in elementary but once I moved a few times my grades started to fall. Before this year I still was a B-C student, but now I'm actually back to A's and B's. They like to pin blame my little grade crisis on her for reasons unknown to me. I used to have ONE good girl friend, FRIEND friend not dating, but we kindof lost our friend ship as we grew and of course its my girlfriends fault. The only thing I've ever done wrong prior to conveiving a child was I snuck out of my house while they were working just to be with her for an hour or so. I was 15 at the time and that was of course, her fault. We do spend alot of time on the phone and my mother disapproves of this. One night she got on the phone and snapped at my gf...and made rude comments towards my girlfriends mother. She called her a few names better not repeated in these forums. My gal and I are not bad people what so ever but honestly I think my family feels replaced. I can't go back on having this child and even if I could I wouldn't. We arn't perfect and we know our life is going to harder than expected but we don't want anyone making it harder then it has to be. I don't want to leave my fam. but I have a child now and I can't run away from my responsibility. I wouldn't run, but I'm scared that I'll be forced away.

Basically, I'm yearning for: LOTS of trees; vegitation/GREEN forests; I do have to be close to water -be it the ocean or an awesome river or lake; FRIENDLY, intelligent people; I love the idea of a big city with an "intimate"/small town atmosphere.
