Catching Up With Last Week's Party...

William Morrow editor Lyssa Keusch shares a laugh with suspense writer Kathryn Fox, who was feted at the Australian consulate last week on the eve of the annual Thrillerfest conference. Fox was beginning to tell us about arriving in Martha's Vineyard just in time to see Bunch of Grapes, the bookstore where she was scheduled to read and sign books, engulfed in flames. (We weren't laughing about the fire, of course—but about all the morbid comments that people made when they found out Fox's latest novel to be published in the U.S., Skin and Bones, is about an arson/murder.)
Also last week, the book party for Laura Dave's second novel, The Divorce Party, was held at Henri Bendel's Fifth Avenue showroom. Dave introduced me to screenwriter Gwyn Lurie, who is adapting the novel after doing similar work on her debut, London Is the Best City in America; Dave also told me that she's temporarily relocating to Los Angeles so the pair can collaborate on a third screenplay based on their own original story idea.

Facebook Sues German Social Network
Facebook isn’t happy with the German social network Studivz. That’s because it believes Studivz, short or Studienverzeichnis – or students’ directory – has violated its intellectual property by copying Facebook’s look, feel and features, according to the BBC. So it’s filed suit against the German upstart in a California court. Studivz has around 10 million members, most of whom are based in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Facebook has around 125 million members, according to the latest figues – but few of them are in Germany, which is why the case has developed, acc

Microsoft Fires Up PR Campaign for Vista
Microsoft knows that Vista has image problem. Having attempted to remedy it at its source with Service Pack 1 but failing to silence naysayers, the company has moved on to Plan B, a PR campaign. The latest ad to surface on Microsoft’s home page depicts an old sea-faring ship beside the words, “At one point, everyone thought the Earth was flat.” The bottom compels the reader to “Get the facts about Windows Vista.” Microsoft’s message is clear: Try it before you knock it. As ZDNet speculates, this will probably be the gist of the company’

The Digital Photography Show #93: Face to Face with Rick Sammon
July 17, 2008 : Today’s show features an interview with long-time friend of the The Digital Photography Show, Rick Sammon.
Rick’s new book, Face to Face, focuses on taking better portraits, or, as its subtitle reads, it’s “Rick Sammon’s Complete Guide to Photographing People.”
RIck gives many great tips on today’s show, including
- How to transform your garage into an inexpensive photo studio
- How to properly calibrate your external flash to use as a “fill light”
- The importance of establishing rapport with your models
- How to not just take - but make - your shots
Rick also talks about his newest venture - online training over at KelbyTraining.com.
For the answer to this show’s contest question - how many pages are there in the printed version of Face to Face (warning, Amazon.com has it wrong), check out the show notes over on my photography blog: ScottsPhotoBlog.com. Rick is giving away signed copies of Face to Face to two lucky winners!
For those of you who enjoy the banter between Michael and I - sorry, today’s show is banterless. We were in the middle of recording when my Mac decided not to work anymore. Turns out there is an issue with the latest build of Leopard and USB audio devices such as my Blue Snowball (you can read about it here). Since I just gave up Windows because of exactly this kind of problem, I’m a little bitter about this, Steve Jobs.
I did buy a new Firewire mixer though, so, assuming the next build of Leopard doesn’t fry that, we should have a return to banter on the next episode.
If you just click here to Subscribe to TPN :: The Digital Photography Show by Email you’ll get the posts announcing each new show in you email. That’s gotta be better than most of your spam, no?

Once the iPhone 3G launched, it was inevitable that a raft of peripherals and accessors for Apple's latest mobile phone would flood the market. Among the new products for the iPhone 3G are new iSAglove cases from zCover, a new version of the case that took home the Macworld's Best iPhone Accessory award for 2008. "As we anticipated, the iPhone 3G's sophisticated and slim compact design required precise molding and tooling to create the ideal contoured case for iPhone 3G," said zCover VP Sean Sa, in a statement. "zCover finalized our tooling until we got a real active Apple

More EU Antitrust Charges Against Intel
On the same day that AMD swaps in a new CEO and announces a $1.189 billion loss for the second fiscal quarter, the European Commission has filed new antitrust charges against chipmaker Intel, alleging the company abused its dominant market position and paid a leading European retailer not to stock products with AMD chips. According the EC, Intel used "its considerable muscle" to channel rebates to a leading European PC retailer, on the condition that the retailer offer only Intel-based systems. The commission also accused Intel of using incentives to persuade PC makers to switch to Intel chips. The new charges are just the latest in a series

Getting back into the blogging swing...
Due to various personal reasons, I've been uncharacteristically unconversational (not a real word, but whateva). My last post was July 9th and I guess I feel a little more comfortable today to get back into the swing of things. So here goes with some linkety-link:
- Conversational marketing is in wikipedia. No mention of me or Join the Conversation so I added it myself. My experience with Wikipedia is that this will probably be removed, so if you'd like to add to this entry, please feel free to do so.
- Westport Library is twittering. Now if that isn't the twitting point, I don't know what is.
- More twitter....a VERY interesting approach by Len Kendall to solving Twitter's service woes. Could this be the future of community-led business model monetization?
- Group M pairs search with social media. The sound you just heard was the sound of dumbness.
- Steve Lubetkin publishes a podcast on my SNCR keynote. Love the pic, Steve :)

- The rock stars of 2.0 - mildly humorous (read: ridiculous) that I'm above Larry Page + Sergey Brin, Jimmy Wales, Stowe Boyd, Doc Searls, Steve Jobs, Steve Chen and more. Vote early and often. First prize is the real rock start accolade: Guitar Hero.
- The 5 creepiest ad techniques of the (near) future. And they are: 5) Tracking every site you browse and every show you watch, 4) Custom-made shilling, 3) Fusing ads and culture, 2) Going undercover and 1) Getting in your head. The real sad part to this article is how many of these worst practices are in place right now!
- Firefox apparently set a world record on June 8 with a bumrush-type community effort to download the latest version of the popular browser. I heard mixed reports about how this turned out, with server/file outages impeding the day's efforts. That reminds me...now that I've purged my 50+ tabs, it's time for me to update Firefox as well!
- What the F*** is social media? Find out here. This presentation from Marta Kagan is getting a ton of views. Congrats to her!
- Anti-conversation meme going around. Really very pathetic and when I get the strength I'll respond to this neuroticsearch for the next new big thing
- Wearing the brand. A very nice "campaign" for CNN using T-shirts as ways of immortalizing headlines in a very smart and creative way.
- Interesting post relating to Delta Skelter, where I'm being compared to Kevin Rose and Robert Scoble insofar that influence has been misused for personal gain. I weigh in with my response in the comment section. It's a good debate, although I'm still not thrilled with being compared to Rose and Scoble (see the rock star point)
- More Skelter...an Ad Age opinion piece from Craig Daitch on my Delta experience.
- One Red Paperclip's Kyle MacDonald published a book on his accomplishment, but like many athletes who went out on top, perhaps should have stayed retired. He's trying to barter once again, this time using his house as the starting point. From what I read, lightening hasn't struck the same place twice.

This Kid Rock May Not Be For Kids

Harry and the Potters. Uncle Monsterface. Math the Band. They're on tour now as part of the Unlimited Enthusiasm Expo, and hitting San Francisco tonight.
But beware, they might not be the bands for your kids, especially if the youngsters have been soaking in the saccharine nightmare of Hannah Montana.
Scratch that: They might be perfect for your kids if they've been soaking in the saccharine nightmare of Hannah Montana.
From "Voldemort Can't Stop the Rock" -- which is about "sticking it to the man!" as lead singer Harry Potter screams in the video at right -- to "Song for the Death Eaters" and onward, Harry and the Potters sound like what might happen if Matthew Sweet crashed headlong into They Might Be Giants.
Meanwhile, Uncle Monsterface may be the world's only sock-puppet rock band, and at least one of its coolest. Check out their tune "Do the Aeroplane" for a slice of Devo-inspired dork noise, or their "conceptual EP" Nintendode, which contains a song for Wii guru Shigeru Miyamoto called "Miyamoto," or the nuts video at right for "Go!" from their latest effort This is an Adventure!
And then there is Math the Band, whose mash of chiptunes and nerdbeat is as grabbing as anything Dan Deacon has done. Tracks about the hydrologic cycle, algebra and faraway lands are as educational as they are weird. The same could be said for the tour as a whole.
Unlimited Enthusiasm Expo is looping all three groups through the U.S. as you read, in hopes of making you like reading and rock more than before. Feel free to bring your handhelds and pocket protectors. But come ready to mosh. This is the real romper room.
