Why does my mac always ask me to "select an application" after downloading something?How do I fix it?(but none of the applications are right for the download...like microsoft office...iphoto...)

HELP!! once microsoft office was installed on my computer i couldn't find iphoto or garage band. i've tried everyone and no one can fix it, what alternatives do i have?! help what other program can i use to fix my photos?

I just got a macbook and ive got some questions. I was very excited for a mac becuase I love graphic design and mixing music so I was told Id be happier with a mac...however im having a few problems with some simple stuff...please help!1) is there a "character map" like there is in windows, under accessories, then system tools?2) how come the resolution in iphoto is so bad...and i cant resize photos like I could if i used microsoft office picture manager? Am I doing something wrong?3) what is a .m4p file?4) do i need to keep the little drive icons on my desktop or can i put them in a folder?thank you SO much for your help

If I were to upgrade:I've never paid for any kind software since switching to a macbook last year (mostly get freeware apps that work fine for me. For example, I didn't pay for MS Office and use Neooffice instead - it's good enough for me)I want to be able to use iPhoto as it has all the simple stuff I need to edit photos (no need for fancy stuff like photoshop), but mine came with the computer (iLife '06), so is it possible to somehow get it off the Tiger install disk and put it on a computer with Leopard installed (for example, has anyone done this with an older mac version and iLife '05?), cause I only really want iPhoto and that's why I don't want to shell out 80 bucks for the 08 version, that or suggest a really cheap (free) equivalent.
