Voting Question: grammar for my thesis?
Stephen-san, the main character of Tsukiyama’s A Samurai’s Garden, grows his new relationships as one would grow a garden, with care and perserverance that lead to strong, beautiful results.okay so is the grammar right? im just not sure if the last part is supposed to be seperated with a comma or a semicolon or just a colon or whatever. yeahh and does the thesis sound like a third graders?thanks guys!that helped alot.okay haha ummm i changed my thesis again and i still think the ending has some grammar problems. In The Samurai’s Garden by Gail Tsukiyama, the patience and perseverance necessary for Stephen-san to build relationships with his new Japanese companions greatly resembles the effort of growing a Japanese garden, each friend, like a specific plant, requiring their own care and love. is it a runon? THANKS<3

Voting Question: What is this?
It al began by not eating enough fiber, which lead to dirty bathroom problems and stained boxers. which led to constatly wipe my self and check every other hour if i was clean. The fiber workd and now i am confident i am always clean after going to the bathroom. The downside is i developed this 'tic' where i would contract my colon musles in and out. i can go with out doing it. so i can control it. but sometimes i due it automaticly and then realise and i stop i do this contraction maybe 7 times in an hour. i think i might have gotten a trauma from feeling dirty all the time. I fell as if i have something between my ass or some sort of non pain infalamtion. I got manuely inspected by a doctor and he said i had no lumps. what might this be? is it all in the head? how do i stop obsessing abut it. It has coaused me agreat depression.

Resolved Question: Blood in my stool....
OK. I have blood in my stool quite often. I have gone to see a doctor about it and I also told one of my immediate family member who is a MD, and while each of them said it is not normal, they didn't think much of it. So I didn't think much of it. Now I've just read for the first time that it might be a sign of colon cancer and it's freaking me out. I used to drink lots on weekends a lot and that used to lead to strained bowel movements the next morning. But I haven't been drinking heavily for a while. No abdominal pain or anything. Do I need to get a colonoscopy? I'm only 32, no family history of colon cancer.

For a research paper I am doing, I need a good title. The paper is about Evolution being taught in the school system. I touch basis many things such as creationalism, how evolution can lead kids to lead lives without morality. I also interview a teacher and she explains how it is not the school's choice, but by law they must teach it because of the curriculum. Ok with all this being said, IT MUST HAVE A SEMI COLON IN THE TITLE. I cannot tell you how much a semi colon is needed. I will give the person 10 points for the title I choose. thanks!

please need help[edit] Memory managementCurrent computer architectures arrange the computer's system in a hierarchical manner, starting from the fastest registers, CPU cache, random access memory and disk storage. An operating system's disk manager coordinates the use of these various types of memory by tracking which one is available, which is to be allocated or deallocated and how to move data between them. This activity, usually referred to as virtual memory management, increases the amount of memory available for each process by making the disk storage seem like main memory. There is a speed penalty associated with using disks or other slower storage as memory – if running processes require significantly more RAM than is available, the system may start thrashing. This can happen either because one process requires a large amount of RAM or because two or more processes compete for a larger amount of memory than is available. This then leads to constant transfer of each process's data to slower storage.Another important part of memory management is managing virtual addresses. If multiple processes are in memory at once, they must be prevented from interfering with each other's memory (unless there is an explicit request to utilise shared memory). This is achieved by having separate address spaces. Each process sees the whole virtual address space, typically from address 0 up to the maximum size of virtual memory, as uniquely assigned to it. The operating system maintains a page table that match virtual addresses to physical addresses. These memory allocations are tracked so that when a process terminates, all memory used by that process can be made available for other processes. The operating system can also write inactive memory pages to secondary storage. This process is called "paging" or "swapping" – the terminology varies between operating systems. It is also typical for operating systems to employ otherwise unused physical memory as a page cache; requests for data from a slower device can be retained in memory to improve performance. The operating system can also pre-load the in-memory cache with data that may be requested by the user in the near future; SuperFetch is an example of this.[edit] Disk and file systemsGenerally, operating systems include support for file systems.Modern file systems comprise a hierarchy of directories. While the idea is conceptually similar across all general-purpose file systems, some differences in implementation exist. Two noticeable examples of this are the character used to separate directories, and case sensitivity.Unix demarcates its path components with a slash (/), a convention followed by operating systems that emulated it or at least its concept of hierarchical directories, such as Linux, Amiga OS and Mac OS X. MS-DOS also emulated this feature, but had already also adopted the CP/M convention of using slashes for additional options to commands, so instead used the backslash () as its component separator. Microsoft Windows continues with this convention; Japanese editions of Windows use ¥, and Korean editions use ₩.[1] Prior to Mac OS X, versions of Mac OS use a colon (:) for a path separator. RISC OS uses a period (.).Unix and Unix-like operating systems allow for any character in file names other than the slash and NUL characters (including line feed (LF) and other control characters). Unix file names are case sensitive, which allows multiple files to be created with names that differ only in case. By contrast, Microsoft Windows file names are not case sensitive by default. Windows also has a larger set of punctuation characters that are not allowed in file names.File systems may provide journaling, which provides safe recovery in the event of a system crash. A journaled file system writes information twice: first to the journal, which is a log of file system operations, then to its proper place in the ordinary file system. In the event of a crash, the system can recover to a consistent state by replaying a portion of the journal. In contrast, non-journaled file systems typically need to be examined in their entirety by a utility such as fsck or chkdsk. Soft updates is an alternative to journalling that avoids the redundant writes by carefully ordering the update operations. Log-structured file systems and ZFS also differ from traditional journaled file systems in that they avoid inconsistencies by always writing new copies of the data, eschewing in-place updates. Many Linux distributions support some or all of ext2, ext3, ReiserFS, Reiser4, GFS, GFS2, OCFS, OCFS2, and NILFS. Linux also has full support for XFS and JFS, along with the FAT file systems, and NTFS.Microsoft Windows includes support for FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS. The NTFS file system is the most efficient and reliable of the four Windows file systems, and as of Windows Vista, is the only file system which the operating system can be installed on. Windows Embedded CE 6.0 introduced ExFAT, a file system suitable for flash drives.Mac OS X supports HFS+ with journaling as its primary file system. It is derived from the Hierarchical File System of the earlier Mac OS. Mac OS X has facilities to read and write FAT16, FAT32, NTFS and other file systems, but cannot be installed to them.Common to all these (and other) operating systems is support for file systems typically found on removable media. FAT12 is the file system most commonly found on floppy discs. ISO 9660 and Universal Disk Format are two common formats that target Compact Discs and DVDs, respectively. Mount Rainier is a newer extension to UDF supported by Linux 2.6 kernels and Windows Vista that facilitates rewriting to DVDs in the same fashion as has been possible with floppy disks.answer this and get free 10 points

I am a colon hydrotherapist and am astonished at the number of people who only use their home toilet to evacuate their bowels. I have noticed that a lot of people with IBS fal into the group of people who only poo at home which leads to increased bowel difficulties. I suspect a lot of difficulties originate in ignoring the urge to defecate and I am interested to find out how many people from this very random selection wait until they get home.

Resolved Question: Clogged digestive...
So heres a little background... I realized I probably have a problem with Candida (yeast) overgrowth due to antiobiotic use a while back, sinus infections, and a diet full of dairy, meat, and processed foods instead of fruits and vegetables (and low fiber). Before I started any type of treatment for this, my "stools" were irregular, maybe 2 times in 3 days, and I would often either be constipated or have really loose, smelly diahrrea (sorry).I first started on the Candida Diet and only ate berries, meat, vegetables, and everything else in extreme moderation (except for some alcohol on the weekends). I then started using Candida Clear by NOW, its a blend of potent anti-fungal herbs which got pretty good reviews. I started taking this to help with the Candida, and thought I would also do a colon cleanse concurrently to make sure there wasnt some kind of blockage making my candida worse. I used Oxy-Powder, which uses ozone (oxygen) to cleanse the digestive system. I think my bowels might really be screwed up though, because when I took the recomended dose (4) I didnt get much results. Once I upped it to 8 pills, I got the effects I had expected but while it said to expect 3 bowel movements a day, I still only got 1 or 2. I also take Dr. Ohhira's probiotics to help replenish the good baceria. Together, this approach led me to lose a lot of waterweight and my acne got MUCH better over a week or two. After doing this for a while I decided to use a psyllium (fiber) based colon cleanser to see if it would work better than the oxy-powder. I am still taking Candida-fighting pills but now taking psyllium twice a day. I expected this to increase my bowel movements and maybe even pull out a few "ropes" like you see from Colonix (psyllium is the main ingredient in the system). None of this has happened - since I started taking the psyllium I have felt bloated around my midsection and clogged up. I've gone back to only having bowel movements of about 2 in 3 days. Now my main question is: could the candida be why I am so clogged up? Could it be from eating too much meats? What should I do now? I just want to clear out my gut, and now I'm afraid the psyllium I thought would help is lodged in there and might not come out... what supplements could help?

Voting Question: In the Body of...
Here is one for you to ponder. If we are all the many members in the Body of Christ and are each graced with a gift within which the Lord is able to edify and build up the Body then why is it that these functions have been turned into an office? To function as a sherpheding one.. a pastoring one, a teaching one or evangelical one does this mean that this function needs to be made into an " office"I say this because in the Body there is not higher or lower. There is only One head and He is Christ. Everything else is the Body. Each member is needed and vital for the Body's growth and maturity and moving on. Yet, a simple function of a pastor has been turned into the " office " of the pastor. If my hand functions to bring food to the mouth, its the function of my hand, would I start treating my hand in a different way and put it above the colon that stores and dispells waste? Both are needed, both are necessary, one is less obvious, the other is visible.. but both function with the Body in view.Has the " offices' created by organized christianity done damage and nullified the function of other gifts in the church?Has these " offices" come in to cause a hiarrachy system to rise up in the church? ( Look at Nicolaitans in Revelation)Do these offices nullify this verse?1 Cor 14:26" What then brothers? Whenever you come together, each one has psalm ( Songleaders nullified this function), has a teaching ( one man preaching while the others listen nullified this function), has a revelation ( when will this be possible during the church meeting) has a tongue ( not always appreciated) has an interpretation ( also not appreciated). LET ALL THINGS BE DONE FOR BUILDING UP"Please share openly, using the word to support your points as you ponder and post to this question. Please also do not think that I do not cherish all those that take the lead in the church....but there is a difference between taking the lead to serve and lording it over others.Much love in ChristsandyJust to touch one point regarding function vs office. There is a subtle yet profound difference between the two. In the Body of Christ, as the many members we each need to function for the growth, building up and maturity of the Body of Christ, this is healthy and normal. Yet when this function is taken to another level where it becomes an office and one part of the body is regarded as higher and superior to the rest of the Body, bringing int with it a hiarrachy system, then we need to be careful. The body is One. All the members are One and as we submit and care for one another, we do so with "Keeping the oneness " in view. I praise the Lord for the the " joints of the rich supply " in the Body who function to supply us with the riches in the word, yet this is still a function, not an office. May the Lord truly clear up this matter among us and bring us on in Him.

Resolved Question: Morbid looking...
For the past 10 months or so, I have been having rather ill symptoms from what I am reading which coincides possibly with cancer (possibly stomach, colon, pancreas, liver) . This is gonna be a long, detailed post, and probably has some rather gross sounding descriptions, so be warned. I also scheduled an appointment with my doctor next week, so please no "get it checked out" responses. I'll start off with background information:- I'm a 19 year old male, in generally good health. I'm not overweight or underweight; I don't have any medical problems now or in my past, other than somewhat continuous constipation when I was 5-6 years of age, which also lead to hemmorhoids. -I do have a family history of cancer. My grandmother died of complications stemming from a benign brain tumor in her 70s. My grandfather died of pancreatic cancer I believe in his 70s. My other grandfather was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer. My mother has not had cancer, but she had a polyp removed from her colon a year ago (she is almost 50). I know its very unlikely for someone my age to have this type of cancer, but I have a fear that its possibly secondary due to metasis.Anyways, onto the symptoms (stool)-For about 10 months I have had somewhat constipation problems-relatively "dry" stool but it still comes out easy and with no straining, but I usually have little to nothing when I wipe.-My stool is usually brown in color, and I have not experienced any pale stools yet, but there seems to be an influx in the green stools (BMs that are both green and brown with a greenish tint) that I have had, even when I haven't had any foods that are known to cause this color - Worst of all, I've seen a few small black spots in my stool a few times over the past six months. I do not think its blood/melena since blood usually leaves streaks. What I read is that it could possibly be iron which comes from a stomach tumor(another edit, this should be my last one, thanks for the answers that have been provided so far)-Sometimes I have a mild feeling that there is still something waiting to "deposit" from my lower abdominen after defecation...this has been happening for maybe around two months-Patterns have changed for about two months...instead of going once a day, its usually I'll go for a few days consecutively, then skip a day in between, and sometimes even two days(but no gap larger than that)I am in no pain or have seen no visible blood. This is one of the reasons why I haven't prompted to see a doctor yet (along with my extreme phobia of anything medically related). Sometimes however, I do feel a mild prickly sensation in my left side (just south from my rib) when I lay on my chest. No other symptoms.Anyways, thanks for responses. I guess my question is, do you know if IBS could possibly create these symptoms? and I'm really scared that it could possibly be liver or pancreatic cancerseeing as they're typically uncurable. I haven't even done anything in life yet :( Thanks for help! Thanks a lot for the answers guys! I don't really have any other symptoms that I can think of- I feel generally fine most of the time although I do sometimes get that uneasy feeling in my stomach right before you have a diarrhea more commonly-but it usually still comes out formed. I usually have no pain while I defecate (if I do, its minor pain around the rectum and only last for a minute or two) except for a minor prickly feeling right under my left rib during the night, but only when I lay down flat. My diet has been generally good as I only east fast food in moderation and I still get an adequate amount of vegetables and fruit into my diet. I usually don't eat at set times, if that makes can make a noticeable difference.Though I haven't been excercising much as I should. And I only drink 1 water bottle a day (compared to the recommended four? I'm never thirsty...) Thanks again.

Resolved Question: Anyone had thier...
My husband (age 23) is currently in the hospital and has been diagnosed as having either Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, they think probably colitis. Anyway he has let it go on for like two years if not more and now has such extensive bleeding an ulcers that they may wind up having to remove his colon. The doctors are busy people and since we had a limited time to talk to them about what exactly that procedure would entail, including the probability of him leading a normal life if the procedure were to have to take place. Has anyone had this procedure?? Any reassuring experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

We also give her vitamins (for dogs) daily. She has been on this diet for 4 years now and it has helped her food and environmental allergies alot!

Resolved Question: SPELL GRAMMAR...
Dear, mom as of September 15 2008 I would like to become a vegetarian. Leading health experts agree that going vegetarian is the single-best thing we can do for ourselves and our families. Healthy vegetarian diets support a lifetime of good health and provide protection against numerous diseases, including our country’s three biggest killers: heart disease, cancer, and strokes. The American Dietetic Association states that vegetarians have “lower rates of death from ischemic heart disease; … lower blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and lower rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and prostate and colon cancer” and that vegetarians are less likely than meat-eaters to be obese.1 Well-planned vegetarian diets provide us with all the nutrients that we need, minus all the saturated fat, cholesterol, and contaminants found in animal flesh, eggs, and dairy products. Now you might be thinking why would I want to be vegetarian when I don’t eat (some of) the vegetables you provide me with such as broclie and okra. As I told you before I like the taste of broclie when it is uncooked I do however don’t like okra but there are a lot of different vegetables I do enjoy such as tomatoes, celery, carrots, and cucumbers. As for fruits I enjoy Strawberries, banana, grape, peache, pear, pineapple, orange, tangerine, grapefruit, watermelon, cantalope, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, and apples . You also might be thinking where would I get my source of protein ? While virtually all vegetarian foods contain some protein, soybeans deserve special mention. Soybeans contain all the essential amino acids and surpass all other plant foods in the amount of protein that they can deliver to humans. The human body is able to digest 92 percent of the protein found in meat and 91 percent of the protein found in soybeans.(6) The availability of many different and delicious soy products (e.g., tempeh, tofu, and soy-based varieties of hot dogs, burgers, and ice cream) in grocery and health-food stores suggests that the soybean, in its many forms, can accommodate a wide range of tastes. So basically I would be able to get all the protein I need. Right now I just want to stop eating animals meat I will still consume dairy products. So please read this and notify me back on what you think.

I fell as if i have something between my *** or some sort of non pain infalamtion. I got manuely inspected by a doctor and he said i had no lumps. what might this be? is it all in the head? how do i stop obsessing abut it. It has coaused me agreat depression.i have been depressed for two weeks and have cried for no reason but i think i cry form whanting to be perfect and have no preoblems then i realize i am tramatized and feel like i have somthing in my colon. I know its all in my head but i get thing feeling of satisfaction whene i compress the colon like for 1/2 second of satisfaction. Is as if my body was telling me push push contract and i do it. but i can control it also.

Resolved Question: What can I do to...
She has a strong family history of colon cancer and polyps. She's 58 yrs old and has never been checked. She always comes up with an excuse of why she can't or won't go. I finally found a very kind woman gastro Dr that we're going to see on Tuesday for a consult and then (hopefully,) have her do the procedure also. My girlfriend is convinced that if she has this done that her colon will be perforated, she'll die, she'll never wake up, become a vegetable, get an infection...you name it and she's come up with an excuse.I actually went and had it done first (without any sedatives,) and watched the whole thing on the monitor, it's a virtually pain free procedure, and I lived through it...I'm glad I went because a large pre-cancerous polyp was found. What can I do to calm her down, and get her to go for this procedure? I know it's not on anyone's top 10 list of fun things to do, but a necessary evil, especially when colon cancer runs in the family...plus she's overweight and a smoker. One of her main concerns is that she won't be able to handle the prep because she feels she "has to" eat every 2 hours, and hates drinking water, clear juices, tea etc. The Dr gave her a very "humane" prep that will allow her to eat a small breakfast and lunch the day before, drink clear liquids from noon til 8pm, then start drinking magnesium citrate and taking a biscotyl suppository and 3 biscotyl pills between 8pm and midnight. This is what I did and it wasn't tortuous at all. After it was all over (I left immediately after because I wasn't drugged,) we went to Cracker Barrell and had a huge breakfast. When she went with me for my consultation, the Dr told her that she should have started screeing for colon cancer at age 40.PS. This procedure can be done w/o drugs. I did it this way and except for a very mild cramp when the Dr went around the transvese colon the entire procedure was pain free. Just make sure that you ask that the Dr use a Pediatric sized colonscope......always insist on this if you're a woman!! An adult sized scope is much too large for the dr to see the inside of a woman's colon and can miss small polyps and lesions...also due to it not being as flexible it can cause a serious perforation!! An adult colonscope should ONLY be used on a man....never on a woman or child.
Voting Question: biology in the news?
ok well i had to do a report but im not sure if this leans more toward health or biology. could i use this for my biology report?...........Lack of Vitamin D Boosts Death RiskMany people aren't getting enough of the sunlight-sourced nutrient, researchers sayPrinter-friendly version Printer-friendly versionHealthDayMonday, August 11, 2008HealthDay news image MONDAY, Aug. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Inadequate vitamin D could increase your risk of death by 26 percent, a new study concludes.Yet many people are not getting enough vitamin D, which the skin makes naturally when exposed to sunlight. A nationwide survey found that 41 percent of men and 53 percent of women in the United States were not getting enough of this vital nutrient."The importance of vitamin D may be underappreciated," said lead author Dr. Michal Melamed, a clinical fellow at Johns Hopkins University. "There are studies that link low vitamin D levels to the development of heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, diabetes, hypertension and different cancers," she said. The report was published in the Aug. 11 online edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine. For the study, Melamed's team collected data on more than 13,000 men and women who took part in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Levels of vitamin D were collected in 1988 and 1994, and the participants were followed through 2000.During more than eight and a half years of follow-up, 1,806 people died. Among these, 777 died from cardiovascular disease. Four hundred of these people were found to be deficient in their vitamin D levels."Those who had the lowest levels of vitamin D had a 26 percent higher risk of death from all causes compared to those with the highest vitamin D levels," Melamed noted. The findings in this study confirm a trend seen in other studies linking vitamin D deficiency to increased risk for breast cancer and depression in the elderly, the researchers noted. Melamed's group had previously shown that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of peripheral artery disease (circulatory problems in the legs) by 80 percent.Among other things, vitamin D is essential for maintaining levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body. "Vitamin D may be very important for overall health," Melamed said.According to the U.S. Institute of Medicine, people should get between 200 and 400 international units of vitamin D a day. The best way to get vitamin D, naturally, is by being out in the sun.As little as 10 to 15 minutes of sun a day can give you all a vitamin D you need. Vitamin D is also available in small quantities in foods such as fish and milk.Whether vitamin D supplements are effective isn't yet known, Melamed said. "That's the million-dollar question," she said."I think people should optimize their diet and sun exposure to get an adequate level of vitamin D without taking supplements," Melamed said. "It may be a good idea for people who are at risk for vitamin D deficiency, including African Americans and people who don't spend a lot of time in the sun, to get their vitamin D levels checked by their doctor."Dr. Michael F. Holick, director of the Vitamin D, Skin and Bone Research Laboratory at Boston University Medical Center, advocates high levels of vitamin D supplements to maintain good health. Vitamin D deficiency is probably the most common medical problem worldwide, Holick said."We know that being vitamin D sufficient reduces the risk of having your first heart attack by more than 50 percent, reduces the risk of having peripheral vascular disease by as much is 80 percent and decreases the risk of prostate, colon, breast and a whole host of other cancers by as much is 50 to 70 percent," Holick said.In addition, not getting enough vitamin D also increases your risk for type 2 diabetes, Holick noted. By increasing your vitamin D intake to 800 international units a day reduces the risk of developing diabetes by as much as a third, he said.Holick recommends taking high doses of vitamin D supplements, as well as sun exposure. In addition, Holick recommends taking as much as 1,400 international units of a vitamin D supplement every day.HealthDay

Resolved Question: Would a colon...
Im a 16 year old, 250+ pound kid lol. I know im overweight. Over almost a year ive been suffering from constipation off and on. When I do go, its in little medium sized plops and about 2 or 3 come out. I end up getting brain fog and headaches and not feeling well. I know its my diet because I dont go outside or anything. This last wednesday I started walking 30 minutes to an hour a day when the weather isnt bad. Its winter here. When I do take a laxative and go, I FEEL BETTER, I feel so energized! I started taking some benefiber seeing if that will help. But I was reading about colon cleansers online, and they described like every symptom I have, when they explain different symptoms of a clogged colon or something that leads to constipation. I know its my diet, but do you think its built inside of me? Would it be safe to buy some? Im also trying to change my diet but its hard too when we dont ever eat HEALTHY..I just dont want to mess my self up. Is it dangerous? My friend said that he drank some of it when he got constipated and it helped him. I think it also may be a food allergy too. Our dinners contain tv dinners or fast food. And when we do eat, its fried chicken and macoroni and cheese with maybe potatoes and corn, but I ALWAYS ignored the corn. Im just so tired of being constipated.Well, its tacos and different stuff like that, porkchops, fried chicken, meatloaf and cheeseburgers :(^^^ as what its like when my mom cooks lol.

Resolved Question: Why are drug...
Study Outcome Won’t Sway Company On Eye DrugWASHINGTON - What does a company do when there's anecdotal evidence that two of its drugs are equally effective in treating a leading cause of blindness in the elderly, one costing patients $60 per treatment and the other $2,000?In the case of Genentech Inc., nothing. The company declined to seek federal approval for the cheaper drug, Avastin, to treat the wet form of age-related macular degeneration. Nor would it help finance — or cooperate with — a National Eye Institute study comparing the effectiveness and safety of Avastin, a cancer drug, and the more expensive eye drug, Lucentis. The financial stakes stemming from the study are huge. Medicare officials estimate there could be 50,000 or more additional cases of macular degeneration a year. Treating just one year's worth of new patients with Lucentis would cost $1.2 billion a year, compared with $60 million if they're treated with Avastin, Medicare officials said.Genentech is making no promises that it will act upon the trial's final results, which are expected in two to three years. The company has raised concerns that safety issues were not properly addressed. In particular, the trial doesn't have enough patients to show some of the rare but serious side effects that could occur with use of the cheaper drug, the company contends."No matter the outcome, we continue to believe Lucentis is the most appropriate treatment for wet AMD," said Krysta Pellegrino, a company spokeswoman.Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels leak blood and fluid affecting the part of the eye that allows you to see fine detail. Many eye doctors believe Avastin works just as well in treating macular degeneration even though it hasn't been approved for that purpose. It's not unusual for drugs to be used off-label — treating diseases other than ones the drug was approved for. Both drugs target a protein that causes blood vessels in the back of the eye to grow, but Lucentis is a much smaller molecule. It was specifically designed — at great expense — to penetrate the retina.Genentech routinely provides financial support for clinical trials, Pellegrino said in an interview. But in this case, she said, "Our resources would be better spent looking at other diseases where there are no treatments.Dr. Philip Rosenfeld, who has treated hundreds of his eye patients in South Florida with Avastin, said Genentech had little economic incentive to help finance the trial — unless it was confident Lucentis was truly superior."By fact that they didn't support the clinical study leads me to conclude that in reality there is no difference between the two drugs," Rosenfeld said. "The result is clearly not in Genentech's best interest."Avastin was approved to treat colon cancer in February 2004. It's a genetically engineered product that inhibits the growth of blood vessels, thus denying tumors blood, oxygen and other nutrients needed for growth. It's expensive, costing $2,200 for a typical treatment for colon cancer. However, for treating eye disease, pharmacy compounding firms split the drug into many tiny doses suitable for injection into the eye. That's what brings the price down to about $60 per injection."It took decades and hundreds of millions of dollars to develop the drug," she said.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080827/ap_on_he_me/med_eye_drugs;_ylt=AnH0UTjx5w3B0wMhFpFI5acDW7oF
Resolved Question: Has anyone ever...
On yet another brisk day in cold, cold Canada, with the polar bears drinking their Coca-Cola and the whalers waving me a happy hello as I walked down the iceway to school, I felt a sense of bliss and happiness that can only come from being an innocent eight-year-old boy. Being a very precocious child, I deeply enjoyed school, and was always eager to get extra work that the other children didn't (a practice largely contributing to my massive unpopularity for the first sixteen years of my life). My school was a small, very old building in Sydney, Nova Scotia; it would later be torn down to make way for prefabricated houses. I happily sat through my classes that morning, my third grade teacher talking with me listening attentively and laughing at her jokes, while others poked fingers, pencils, and other various objects into various orifices and threw various scoopings therefrom. After we started to talk about the ever-so-complex matter of plurality involving words ending with the letter X, I grew bored and took a bathroom break; I felt a little like I had to deposit a brown Twinkie. I waddled off to the bathroom, as I was a pudgy, round little kid (attributing yet more to my gross unpopularity). Upon arriving, I sat my rump down upon the cold porcelain -- remember the polar bears -- and grunted my damnedest. I had not yet realized the way of Poodhism: only when you are at peace with yourself and with the toilet will the negative energy flow out of you. As a consequence, anyone entering the bathroom heard the odd, painful-sounding gruntings of a fat midget on the can. I pushed and pushed like the Little Train That Could, except my anus was clearly his derailed brother, the Little Train That Couldn't. I resigned myself to standing up, wiping off just in case I'd shot out some raisins without my knowledge, and returning to the classroom. I really didn't like being questioned or confronted by teachers, because I always felt that the vegetative morons in the class (who could murder in front of you your sister, the teacher, and the Governor General, and walk away with no more than a wrist slap) deserved much more of the teacher's scoldings than I did. As a result, whenever confronted, I would respond somewhat sarcastically and harshly. "What took so long in the bathroom?" my kind-but-inconsiderate teacher demanded in front of the class. "My digestion," I snappily replied. I was met with a scowl and a "sit down" accompanied by a plethora of comments from my ‘peers': "Oooh, dee-jess-shun!""Nerd!""Weiner!""Cornelius!" (One really odd kid got kicks out of calling me "Cornelius"; to this day, I don't know why.) The bell rang and I happily skipped out to the negative two-hundred-and-sixty-two schoolyard. I played, desperately trying to avoid succumbing to the harsh, brutal Canadian elements. And I downed a sandwich of leafy vegetables and mayonnaise, as I really just didn't like meat at the time. (My lunch is relevant to my story, of course, because the sheer amount of fiber and near total lack of iron in my diet led to some pretty serious powershitting; I pinched loaves regularly three to five times daily. On this day, I hadn't. And this was odd -- very odd.) We filed back into class upon the sounding of the ice-bell (basically the foghorn from a hockey game). We promptly sat down in our seats and prepared to continue our stimulating discussion on the letter X. It was around this time I felt pockets of gas and other nether-beings moving around down under -- like an Australian rebellion gone hostile, the southern inhabitants were attempting a bloody coup on my brown bastion. "Hey, no problem," I thought to myself. After all, it was after lunch -- there was very little of the school day left, and I knew I could hold it until I could leave. I knew it, that is, until the proletariat poop in my southern realms, too long held prisoner by the abysmal treatment of my despotic colon, launched one more salvo on the bay doors, and I could feel sheer knife-like pains shooting all through my lower body. This was going to be a horrific shit -- the kind of shit about which documentaries are made. Realizing that I could hold it no longer, I raised my hand deftly into the air, waving somewhat urgently. "Yes, Matthew?" the teacher enquired. "May I go to the bathroom?" I gruntingly replied. "No. You went before lunch, and you had the entire lunch hour to go. So you stay here until we're done."The horror! I knew my doom was approaching. Choosing not to plead with the teacher, I instead decided to consult with the general minding the rebellion, which had now pushed well beyond the poop factory district and was pressing down the Hershey highway with the vigor of a mob only accurately depicted in the works of Mary Shelley. The general advised me that we should form a line; and so I clenched my butt cheeks so hard I swear I split atoms. Like a row of riot police smashing batons down on filthy unwashed hippies, my ass cheeks faithfully guarded my grey sweatpants from the attackers pressing to put an end to free trade, critical thought, and clean clothing -- assailants wishing to put the last cherry on the cake sealing my unpopularity into the stones of time, ensuring I would be dateless and fat until I was sixty-two. My regard in the public eye was already all but demolished, as the previous week I had shown up to school in a Power Rangers costume, sure that no one would recognize me and that I would somehow have mystical Kung-Fu powers that would allow me to eradicate my oppressors. I had been mistaken. The pressure grew to a point at which I was sure I would implode. My face was red and I was sweating and grunting loudly, occasionally letting out the odd, sharp-sounding, painfully hot fart. The kids around me knew the end was near and moved away like Englishmen avoiding plague-bearers. I waved my hand frantically to the teacher to allow me release; she denied me yet again. And there I sat in a conundrum: not wanting to defy my teacher, but not wanting to destroy my life. I was at the pivotal crossroads at which every small child should stand at one point in his or her life: should I disobey the teacher and run to the bathroom, or should I utterly shit myself in front of my peers? What happened next is terrible. When most people lose control of their bowels, a small lump of matter forces its way out of the anus, and out some more, until eventually you've soiled yourself. But I guess I'm not most people. While I was pondering the nature of defiance verses self-discipline in a heavily introspective debate, I lost control of the forces; and a deadly explosion finished off the rest of my riot police, leaving their scattered remains all about. I had lost control. A terrific and awe-inspiring CRACK of a fart escaped my anus, fueled by the sheer power of one-hundred percent refined green mucky diarrhea. The noise of the farting was a million times amplified by the hard wooden seat against which my ass was situated. A torrent of green muck escaped me. I sat awestruck, not knowing what to do with myself. The torrent continued until the crap had literally gone down my leg and was now burning my skin with its acidic glop. Eventually my shoes filled with shit, a fact I never let on -- I don't know why shit in my shoes was more embarrassing than shit in my pants, but it was. As I stood up, tears rolled down my young face. The back of my pants were absolutely saturated in sheer, vile feces. I walked to the bathroom, my shoes making the noises of rubber boots filled with water, splat-splat-splatting along the floor. I plunked myself into a stall and wept. I ended up inspiring pity in the mother of one of my fellow students, an employee at the school. She gave me an extra pair of pants. I packed the glob of shit-soaked filth into my backpack and left. I just left. Thus began the most repulsive walk home I have ever endured.
Voting Question: Results of a colon...
I was considering having a colonic or colon cleansing program soon in order to reduce the toxic buildup and stuff. (Yeah, you've seen the infomercials and such. I've been researching this stuff for a few months.)I know the general expected results: improved immune system, energy, proper digestion, etc., but there are a couple of things that I'm still slightly confused on.I've read that removing the impacted matter on the intestine walls will allow the body to absorb more of the food that you take in. This leads me to a couple of possible outcomes. 1) The body understands that its nutritional needs are met and will be hungry less often. Thereby possibly losing weight. 2) The hunger will not change, but more calories (protein/sugar/carbs) will be able to be absorbed by the body, so weight gain might occur. Then of course nothing might change in the slightest! :OI'm just curious as to the opinions of others. Also feel free to share your colon cleansing experiences. Thanks!Just so you know, I'm no health novice going after the latest trendy item. I'm a personal trainer and competitive bodybuilder and am just looking for something new to keep me in peak condition.
