Market Mash Up: Beets & Blue Cheese
The Montgomery Farm Womenâs Cooperative Market has been offering farm fresh foods by local entrepreneurial farmers, chefs and bakers to Betheda-area residents long before the concept of a farmersâ market was cool.
And after 76 years, itâs still going strong. Highlights from Tuesdayâs visit include the always elegant and helpful ladies behind the counter of Stonyman Gourmet Farmer, purveyors at the market since 2005. Their cheese selection is better and more widely varied than most and doesnât come with attitude. They also recently began selling coffee beans and just opened a retail store in Washington, VA.
I picked a pungent, dry blue to pair with the beautiful baby beets I picked up two stalls down, already imagining how they would come together with the barest touch of olive oil and vinegar.
A new vendor only on his third week is one to watch, although I lost his card already (darn changing of the purses, gets me every time). No matter. I know where to find him.
He plies customers with his soft French accent and offers bites of homemade chocolate croissants that are not overly-sweet with just enough salt and butter and flaky pastry to make you forget about dieting for at least another hour. I bought two, as well as a whole wheat baguette, on which I have designs for a bread salad to use up the peaches and tomatoes waiting patiently for attention on my counter and the basil starting to flower in the garden.
Hereâs a recipe for the beets, thinly sliced, lightly dressed, and topped with fine crumbles of stinky cheese. It only looks complicated because of the perfect little thin slices, but let me tell you, mandolines are worth the $15 at the Asian market. They are precise and can make someone with dull knives (me) look good.
You could use any cheese you like here, or even a fresh yogurt mixed with dill and cucumbers.
Beet Carpaccio with Blue Cheese
1 bunch baby beets, well scrubbed, trimmed of tops and tails
1-2 t. olive oil
squeeze of lemon
drizzle or two of sherry vinegar
about 3 T. blue cheese, finely crumbled
parsley for garnish
S&P
Boil the beets in a medium saucepan for about 20 minutes or until they begin to yield to a fork prick. Immediately drain and set into an icebath until cool enough to handle -- about 7 minutes.
When beets are cool enough, rub off skins under running water and trip ends if necessary.
Slice with mandoline or really sharp knife into 1/16â rounds. Place rounds in a bowl and toss GENTLY with olive oil and lemon. Arrange on a plate in a circle (see above.)
Scoop finely crumbled cheese into an ice cream scoop and press down gently. Release scoop onto the center of your beet circle. Drizzle the whole thing with a bit more vinegar, and add salt and pepper to taste. Serve 2 at room temperature as an appetizer.

I'm sure you've all heard the song 24 hours from Tulsa and I was just wondering what part of America do you have to be in that it will take you 24 hours to get to Tulsa.

Leo LaPorte and I worked together a few years ago on TechTV. Since that time, we have appeared at different conferences and conventions at the same time. People constantly ask “when will you and Leo do something together again!?”. We are each doing our own thing these days, but it was great fun to get together via phone during Leo’s recent “24 Hours of iPhone”. We had a lot of laughs, and discussed many different things. First and foremost, of course, we dished about the new iPhone 3G. Here’s a peek at some of the other products we talked about.
Tengu
Here we have a cute little white plastic brick with a face made of LEDs. The tiny microphone in the base picks up sounds in the room, whether itâs music, or your loudmouth boss, and makes his mouth move in time. Itâs like heâs lip synching to the song! Kinda like Britney, only much much smaller, and probably smells better.
Heâs USB powered, so plug him in to any powered USB port, set him near your favorite sound-source, and your little buddy will perform for you all day long!
USB Humping Dog
It doesnât serve any purpose, but itâs what they do. They are insatiable. And thatâs all we really have to say. Harley is brown and Duke is black, and you can take your pick. Oh, and donât worry - if the kids ask what the doggie is doing to your computer, just say, âHeâs trying to jump over the computer, but he got a little stuck,â or âThe computer is giving him a piggyback ride.â Either will suffice.
We, of course, had to talk about live streaming. I explained to Leo that I love leaving the stream running all the time for many reasons. You never know what will happen at any given time throughout the day. You can see bloopers, chat it up with the Mods, watch me lose my patience and sanity, and even help me out when I’m stuck. Leo said that I am his inspiration for his own live streaming. He said he caught what we were doing here one day, and thought to himself “this is what I need to be doing!”.
It was great spending some time chatting one-on-one with Leo again. Keep your eyes and ears open. You never know when and where it could happen again.

Open Question: second chance..is it...
So I met this guy online and then we ended up chatting on Y!Messenger during the whole summer for 3 hours a day while I was taking 5 week sumer classes at a community college and staying up there with my sister for the summer.Anyhow he broke his promise twice that he would call because of work but made up for it the third time around and we talked on the cell as though nothing happened for 2 hours(all this happened after I just got out of a 2 years and 9 months relationship which I ended),then I thought he ignored me so I got mad at him and wrote him these e-mails which made him think that I do not want to talk with him.We made amence but argued some more, made amence another time and then he was clearing his schedule to chat with me when IKE struck and he lost power. After IKE work was hectic for him and he did not give a sign of life so I wrote him an email telling him how I felt which was mad for him breaking his promises, etc and I never heard from him after I wrote him afterwards. Then my cell screen went blank so I could have people call me but had no idea who was calling, lost his number when I got my new cell and after I called him(found his #) he did not call back.I left him a voice mail saying that if he wants to talk he knows where he can find me because I do not want to talk with him.Anyhow he left me a voice mail saying that he really really really wants to talk to me and then it was us playing phone tag.I wanted to get back at him but then dropped it.Anyhow this is where it gets interesting: 2-3 days ago he was in S.C. and we were texting, his texts made me smile and well I invited him to my homecoming at my university. The next day he texts me telling me that he has a client he might have to work with but he told his boss that he might take a day off which his boss did not like because they have so much to do.For once he is keeping his word which is impressing me,then yesterday when I was with my guyfriend that I was hanging out with he texts me asking if I have ne classes and tells me that he will be by my university at a certain time which coincided w/ my philo class and the test I had in there.Anyhow he wanted to hang out with me and now he is doing everything possible to come and see me.I do not know what to think of his actions since he seems to have changed,he opened up to me about his family problems and the advice I gave him he applied it to his sister's marital/separated problem then when she asked where he got the advice from he said from a friend named _.I finally told him that I do not have time for bs before he changed that is and he called me when he was drunk once,he was hanging out with friends(playing poker) and I wanted to let him go enjoy his friends' co. but he ended up cussing them so I had to calm him down over the cell.So is he interested in me,playing games or what?

Open Question: What is a good morning...
I get up early every day for work and I'm constantly tired through out the day. I work six days a week, nine hours a day at a book store. I run a few errands through out the day as needed but nothing more than driving to a meeting with my bookkeeper or picking up my husband for lunch. After that I go home, pick up my grandmother for dinner and cook. After taking her home I do what ever house hold chores need to be done and go to bed. I make sure to get a solid eight hours of sleep but am still tired when I get up the next morning. What I'm looking for is something that could help me with an energy boost and help "pep" me up for the day. Thanks!
âRepublicans are panicked about...
Barack Obama’s trip overseas is off to a great start — with Prime Minister Maliki endorsing Obama’s withdrawal plan and the White House accidentally informing every news organization about it — and Chuck Todd is hearing that Republicans are starting to worry.

MR. TODD: Republicans are panicked about this trip because they think that this is going to be a home run. And arguably, you’ve got some Obama folks who actually think he ought to come home right now. It’s never going to get as good as it’s gotten in the last 48 hours. You’ve got McCain suddenly in the White House parroting what Obama has been saying in Afghanistan. The McCain folks will say, “Hey, we’re not parroting. We’ve been there before.” But they clearly caught McCain flat-footed there. And then what Maliki did, even in the backtrack statement that the spokes–the government spokesperson over there said, he threw in the word “timetable.”
In order to really appreciate the importance of the Maliki development, consider what would happen if the opposite occured:
To really understand the importance of Maliki’s comments, you need to consider their opposite. Imagine if Maliki had walked in front of the cameras and said, “at this stage, a timetable for withdrawal is unrealistic, and we hope our American friends will not bow to domestic political pressures and be hasty in leaving Iraq just as the country improves.” It would be a transformative moment in this election. John McCain would talk of nothing else. The cable shows would talk of nothing else. Magazines would run thousands of covers about “Obama’s Iraq Problem.” Obama would probably lose the race.
Exactly. And this is what Marc Amibinder has to report:
Via e-mail, a prominent Republican strategist who occasionally provides advice to the McCain campaign said, simply, “We’re fu*ked.”
If McCain loses the foreign policy debate, which is becoming increasingly likely, he’ll have an insurmountable problem on his hands.

Open Question: Is it his reflux? Or...
So, my baby is 6 months old. He has reflux and we started him on prevacid about 3-4 weeks ago. He did good on it for a couple weeks. Before the prevacid, he would spit up alot and scream for hours sometimes. He got his shots 6 days ago. Usually he gets a fever like the day after and is fussy for like 2 days then is fine. But, this time he didn't get a fever, was fine for a couple days.. but the last 4 days hes slowly getting worse. I can tell he does not feel good, he is spitting up more then ever almost constantly. He has runny poo, not liquidy but runny and having a poopy diaper every 2-3 hours. (He usually only has 1-2 a day) And, sometimes he just starts screaming and screams until he falls asleep. I dont know if I should take him to the Dr? Could it be from his shots and serious? Or something we just have to wait out? Or reflux? He was doing better on the medicine... I dont understand why he would all the sudden get it bad again?
Open Question: Bad friend not to go?
So I just broke up with my gf, of over three years, as of two days ago. I'm supposed to go to a wedding this Sat, that is 3-4 hours away. However, Sat night I want to meet some girls, because one of them could be a potential roommate. I am very picky about roomies, and I do not want to miss an opportunity, because this girl is supposedly the perfect roomie, well not perfect, but you know what I mean, I hope. Anyways. I'm thinking about not going to the wedding, so I can meet this girl, and get my life going again. The friend's wedding,....is a friend from high school, I'm almost 22 now. We are not close, and have only hung out once since high school. She will always be a friend, but it isn't like we are close.....I'm really considering just staying in town, I think the last thing I want to see is to love birds tying the knot...what do you think?

Open Question: what do you think i...
my boyfriend and i have been dating over a year and by the time college rolls around it be almost two years. well he's moving 4 hours away to ohio for college. i was going to stay home but i recently discovered another college in the town he is moving to that offers what i want to go to school for. (only 3 colleges in my state offer it) so naturally i was stoked! so i talk to him about it and it seems like he doesn't really want me to go there.. its like the vibes i get. but its really confusing because if he wants to stay together through it all.. why wouldn't he want me to enjoy college with him? they're two totally different colleges on opposite sides of town and its not like i'd see him every day.. i just don't know if i should pursue it.. whenever i ask him about it he says he'd miss me so much if we were apart but he never actually says he'd want me there. to me it sounds like he has a plan to break up before he leaves.. maybe i'm just being to optimistic..?
Open Question: I want my ex back so...
Me and my ex were together for two years. I ended it with him for stupid little reasons hoping things would change. I had alot of trouble telling him my thoughts, and I really regret it. he tried getting me back for about a month and I just kep telling him I needed my space. So eventually he left me alone to think about things and I realize I want him back so much and miss him I have alot of trouble showing my emotions. Last night I ran into him and just broke down he says he is happy where he is right now but a week ago he was trying to get back with me...I dont understand I told him how i felt and that i really think we could work all this out and he talked to me for a few hours but just kept saying we are better off friends...what do I do I dont want loose him I think he still has feelings for me but I just dont understand what do i do leave him alone or what??
Open Question: are we really in a...
If we are really in a recession why are people paying $250 to go to Miley Cyrus concerts. Why are people paying $30 a month for netflix? When I see Hollywood go bankrupt, then I will believe people are really hurting for money. Also, if people are desparate for money, why do they still speed. I commute over an hour to work. When I keep my RPM's below 2, I get an extra round trip. Saves me alot of money to do 65. Most of the speed limits in the city are 60 anyway. When I see other people do the speed limit to save gas, I will believe that gas is priced too high. Peopel don't give these things up because it will make them uncomfortable. It feels better to speed. Our grandparents went through a recession and reused napkins, for goodness sake. Why are people complaining about high prices if they are still spending on unneccesary things.

Open Question: What caused my seizure...
During the seizure, I convulsed, my eyes were looking upwards, I bit my tongue hard and collapsed, then slept for 2 hours. I wasn't aware of any of this- my friend told me when I awoke. I was very sleep deprived that morning- it was 6 am and I'd only slept 1 hr or maybe 1/2 hour. The CT scan was okay, and I cannot yet afford the EEG (my insurance does reimbursement so I have to wait til I get paid again).
Open Question: Looking back what have...
My husband and I just had our first child *our son* hes almost five months old now and looking back there are so many things I learned from being pregnant to being a mother. So many things I hope I remember next time around. When I was pregnant I didn't follow the 'rules' about what to at and what not to eat. I ate all of the blue cheese I wanted along with subs *oh gosh* and I don't regret that one bit because I had a terrific pregnancy. Labor on the other hand, I wasn't expecting to be in SO much pain weeks later. I just thought as soon as you had the baby you weren't in pain anymore *naive* So I hope I remember that so I am not so down in the dumps about it.Another thing with a newborn I have learned every baby is different and you shouldn't follow the 'rules' because my son wasn't happy with the 2 ounces every 3 hours bit. The first couple of nights were horrid because he would scream for those 3 hours until he got fed again. So I upped it to 3-4 ounces and he was as happy as can be. I have also learned you are not a terrible mother if you decide for whatever reason not to breast feed.I tried for 2 months and I felt so guilty about giving it up but I see how happy my son is and how happy I am and the guilt just slipped away. He is getting fed and hes happy, that's all that counts. What surprised you about pregnancy, labor, and being a mom? What things would you change next time around?
Open Question: Need advice on...
OK, caught him redhanded...finally last week after 9 months of suspecting and knowing without proof. Wouldn't take his calls or return his text messages for 2 days and he KEPT trying. This is the most attention he has given me in months. I made him take an available apratment and he moved in yesterday. Just sleeping on the floor there. So, we finally start talking and he asks what he needs to do, to make this right. Before he got the apartment I told him, you have to take me in front of her, and tell her she was a mistake and it's over, that you love me and am going to prove it to me. He said he would do it, but hadn't since Friday, so I made him take the apartment. Yesterday, I broke down on the phone crying and for once in 9 months he cared how I felt, he came over immediately and just held me for a couple hours and told me he was going to make things right for me. I felt so good, but now today is another day and he hasn't done anything yet. She just thinks we are separated and probably thinks or maybe told that he is going to be with her. Every day is VERY hard, because he works with her. He is a service tech and she is the secretary. She takes the service calls and talks to him a few times a day. They have met for sex at her lunch time and after work. I don't feel I should go another day without him doing what I asked. I told him I wasn't going to let him hurt me anymore last week, and now I have put myself in a worse position of being hurt. I know what your all going to say, but Truly, last night, I had back the husband that I married and the wonderful man I lived with for 9 years before this. He was caring and sensitive and so loving. He hasn't been like that in probably a year. He said he didn't even know what he'd been doing and he must be stupid or something. Everything was right and I know my husband very well and I know he was sincere last night, BUT today is a horrible sick feeling once again. How long should I wait. I know he wants to fix this marriage, but he is a kind person and I know he doesn't want to cruelly hurt her, but he has to put me first...NOW...right
Open Question: Anyone else getting...
352-688-0973 is the number. i answered it once to see what it was an if it was a sales person i was going to remove myself off their list. well it turned out that its some publishing company and i'm entered in a contest to win 9mil and i get a free watch and a free subscription to womans day magazine. now i never entered no contest and i just got my cell phone 2wks ago but these people know the cell number and my address and i've only lived here at this address for 2wks as well.now i told them iwasnt interested and hung up and now they have been calling me every single hour on the hour every single day. is this legal? what can i do about this because it's very annoying for one thing and its just plain stupid of them to do this. i think it's a scam but I don't know. Any advice on this issue?
Open Question: Looking for a healthy...
I am looking for a good workout plan to keep me in shape for the winter and ultimately create a model of how I should keep myself fit. I am 21 and I work as a package handler at UPS so I can say my job keeps me moving for at least 4 hours a day. I take a once a day multi vitamin and I am starting to clean up my diet, what I am looking for is a good work out regiment... not really to build myself up but to just slim down and tone. I am 5'10" and about 200 lbs on average. Any ideas you could bounce off me would be apreciated.
Open Question: Was I wrong for doing...
Recently I went out with my niece.........My niece is known to over do her drinking when we go out..Or if anyone goes out with her....I made a vow never to do this again. My niece got very intoxicated within a short time. she acts a plum fool, falling, talking about people including me' picking fights, crying and constantly talking about her past and bad mouthing her 4 girls, she brags on how she is not their for them emotionally and that she does not give a *&*%$. Well doing this conversation I managed to her out of the club. And in the car we sat for two hours listening to her babble on and on. I told my niece that my seventeen year old son, seems to be going through that teen age faze of being lazy ect.Once I mentioned his name she began to explain to me that, I need to watch him. because her sister stated that the reason why her son '16 do not hang around my son is because she felt that my son and his so called friends broke into her house and stole his play station 2 and games, "one year ago" she states that my son and his friends comitted robbery. Of course I was stunned, At this point I did not care whether she was drunk or not, I said what are you talking about? My son would not do no such thing. i mentioned to her that i was going to contact her and get to the bottom of this. The next day her sister called me regarding a different matter." now this is the same person that stop communicating to me years ago. While I had her on the phone I mentioned what my niece said, she got upset with her sister, and called her. my niece called me and said that I was wrong for doing that, and that it was petty, I told her that I wanted to know why this was put on my son, when in fact that this did not happened. My niece sister had always thought she was better and looks down on everyone. My son goes through bouts of deprression but is totally harmless, he has only one friend. when I brought this too his attention his eyes welled up with tears and he went for a walk, he was really close with my niece sister son for years and now we know why he stop talking to him. I as a parent is very devoted to my children life, I love my children, and I felt the need to call to see if she really felt this way. Now my niece is upset with me and told me that she will never speak to me again. I'm not to much in a rush for her to be my niece again because she suck as a mom and a person, she really made me feel that I did something wrong, and I feel that I did it out of love. Help me with this.
Open Question: trying to lose weight...?
Hello, I have heard it all and read it all. Yes, its all about taking in fewer calories and exercising which is what I did everyday for two months. For two months I went to the gym everyday and worked out for thirty to forty minutes and walked for one hour, and had between 1000 and 1500 calories a day and lost about one kilogram which for those of you who dont know is about 2 and something pounds. But I'm really not satisfied with that, so now I'm limiting my calorie intake even more, to 1200 calories and jogging ten laps a day, but then I got ravenous today and indulged in about 700 calories (without a workout) and i had the food 2 hours ago but Im scared to go to bed because I dont want my body to absorb those calories. What do you guys think? Should I keep limiting myself on the calories? Because without that, I just cant lose weight but if I do do this, I just binge eat like crazy like the other day I had two large bowls of sugary cereal until I came to my senses and then it was too late, I already had it.I want to be healthy and lose weight, and not get these insane binge sessions, and when I want to binge, I always binge on bread. Sweet bread, I had 700 calories of bread earlier and it makes me feel so so guilty!
Open Question: Fiancee and I 'taking...
My fiancee and I have been together for a little over two years. Four months ago we moved in together, we got our own apartment, it's us, her 2 1/2 year old son (from a previous relationship) and our dog. It's been terrible the last few months. We fight almost daily and it's not something that I can handle.Anyways, I decided I wanted a break.I made her aware of this a few hours ago, we're going to talk after work. My question is, has anyone been through this? Currently we share a car (which I own) and I give her rides to/from work, among other places. We share a bed and a bathroom, which makes me wonder how this works. I can't afford to move out, yet. Has anyone done this and had it work out? Or is this something that should be done in a clean break and just wash my hands of it?

Open Question: NEED SOME HELP!!!!...
asked the question last night about do you think my girlfriend will break up with me if I don't quit.Today on the way to school I picked her up. She did her normal thing and got in my truck gave me a kiss and then asked if she could see my skoal tin. I gave it to her figuring she would count them. Instead she took one out and put it in her mouth and said does this look hot to you. I didn't answer because it was no I asked her to take it out and asked for my tin back when she gave it to me I throw it out the window. I told her I was done. I stopped at the gas station and got some apple flavored jolly ranchers. All my guy friends are making fun of me telling me I'm Whipped. The jolly rancher thing seems to be working cause I chew apple skoal. My girlfriend seems to be a lot more happier also.My question is I still have 2 and a half hours left of school and I'm out of jolly rancher. What do I do?My friends keep showing me their tins and it's making me want to chew more then ever. But I don't want to.....I don't know if that makes any sense. Don't teacher usually have candy?
Open Question: Son with really...
I have a 13 year old son, and he is in swimming lessons 3 days a week. After his hour lesson, we quickly run into the family changeroom he takes a quick shower and I make sure he gets a move on quickly because usually he will take WAY too long himself, (also pool policy to use family) and I've noticed that his skin is all wrinkled, not just on his hands and toes, but on his arms/legs/feet and stomach basically his whole body. It doesn't stay wrinkled for just a few minutes, it will stay like that for a couple hours sometimes even up to 4 hours, where it just feels all wrinkled and shriveled. What should I do to prevent this from happening? Even at home when he takes a shower or bath thats over 10 minutes, his skin gets all wrinkled for a very long time. I was even tempted to apply a firming/toning lotion on him but I'm not sure if thats a good idea or maybe it is? For parents with babies, do they ever get wrinkled skin after their bath? What do you do?When I take a bath, only my hands and toes get wrinkled, and they only stay that way for a couple minutes. Any ideas?

VA - India - the greatest songs ever
Home to over one billion cow-loving folks, India is not the best place to order Steak Diane. But when itâs not playing havoc with delicate Western stomachs, India produces some of the worldâs most entrancing music.
Indiaâs musical heritage has long inspired and been shamelessly pilfered by the likes of The Beatles and Madonna. India The Greatest Songs Ever reverses this outflow of talent, borrowing Western club beats to transform the traditional musical styles of India into late night prayers for disco trash like you and me.
India The Greatest Songs Ever serves an aural feast of richly flavoured sounds and textures, coating your listening palate with a heady, intoxicating taste. Itâs a musical masala of sounds ranging from the spiraling vocals of Qawwali, the devotional music of Sufism, to the pulsating beat of tabla and dhol percussion.
Forget the greasy tasteless offerings of fast food Western musos. Like a fiery vindaloo, India The Greatest Songs Ever assaults your senses, mixing pleasure with pain, leaving you gasping for water but wanting to taste more.
Fun Da Mentalâs âJa Sha Taanâ draws upon Qawwaliâs rich vein of poetic imagery to deliver an ecstatic call of devotion infused by a pulsating electro-beat. As exhilarating as a Sufi dervish dancer, âJa Sha Taanâ quickens the pulse like a two hour of session of Bikram yoga or a trek up a Himalayan mountain.
Lithe, yoga-stretched limbs are needed to keep pace with the energetic bhangra of Saqiâs âSir Dukh Daâ. Fusing folk bhangra with funkified-pop, Saqi cooks-up a tasty aural treat from the most unlikely of ingredients.
Renowned Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan brings his beautiful, subtle harmonies on âTere Bin Nai Lagdaâ. As produced by UK club producers Partners in Crime, this Qawwali song of devotion becomes an electro-ballad to put Celine Dion to shame.
Elsewhere, Bollywoodâs finest songstress Lata Mangeshkar out divas the fattest of opera stars as she pins for lost souls on âAe-Dil-E-Nadanâ. Kumar Sanu also gets choked up and overwhelmed by love on âEk Ladki Ko Dekhaâ, making tragic star-crossed lovers as sexy as a tight mini-skirt worn on svelte disco hips.
India The Greatest Songs Ever samples the vast array of Indian musical tastes, satisfying the most sensitive of disco tummies without the risk of angina or a vicious bout of diarrhea. If only the same could be for the late-night Indian takeaways catering to clubbers that line Oxford Street.

'The greatest Songs Ever' is a fairly broad statement, and not a very exacting one. Having said that, it is one of my favourite collections from the recent past. I play it a lot when we have a gathering of the clans- to share food and merriment. Some other reviews I have read on this collection, have actually made disparaging remarks with regards to track 9. Palmistry - Tabla Beat Science ( Bill Laswell, Zakir Hussain) As a lover of the tabla and a fan of Zakir Hussain- I found the comments jarring...but yes beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case, music to the ear.Track list

Open Question: Need advice on what to...
First night out in a LONG time...Need advice on what to wear...?Me and My husband are going to get a chrysler 300 C limo, go out to eat at a fairly expensive steak house, then go to a classy, yet laid back night club. I HAVE NO FRICKEN IDEA, WHAT TO WEAR!!!! ....I've been wearing jeans and tank tops or t-shirts, since I've had my baby in August 2007 lolMy husband is wearing jeans and a white long sleeved dress shirt, with his sleeves rolled up and probably a wifebeater underneath....I would really like some advice on what to wear. I want to look sexy and feel good. I'm debating on whether I should wear jeans, black dress pants, a skirt....I dunno.....I'm almost 6'0", 155 lbs, I'm not super skinny, but not fat either. I do have a little tummy, that I'm wanting to hide. Oh...and if I wore a skirt, I would have to wear darker nylons, because my legs bruise easily and I always have them.... All advice on what kind of style I should wear and color, would be awesome...Thanks!3 hours ago - 3 days left to answer. Like jasmine, nighttime soft and delicate, heard in the sudden pause of a dozen conversations. Like curry, seasoning small talk into sublime soul sharing. Like molasses, soft and comforting, though we're "just friends". Like pure summer dew, innocent and clear kisses. Like sugar, delicious and excruciatingly sweet. Like butter, melting words enhancing our flavor. Like yellow sliced cheese, once delightful, now blasé. Like jalepeño, ferocious heat cursing stupid infidelities. Like ice, a no-taste defined by cold, the absence of heat Like copper, metallic aftertaste lingering long after the real thing is gone. Like whiskey, hateful burning but never, ever enough.

The interrogation had lasted for hours, seemingly, 'unsatisfactory' answers rewarded with increasingly strong jolts of electricity. Jeff writhed in pain. The last charge had almost knocked him out.
"Tell me!" commanded the voice. "What did you pass to that agent?"
"I can't say, and you're supposed to put me on 'The Box', not fry me," he screamed.
"You're in a box; close enough," replied the voice. A long sizzle, a longer scream.
Finally: "Tech data for the new radar."
"Good," said the voice, pleased. "We had to confirm the data's validity. By the way - tell your CIA 'Thanks!' for us."
TERRY TEE
Josh woke to the voice "tissue regeneration complete, blood pressure 120 over 68, pulse 55, thank you for using the Nightingale, Mk IV., have a nice day"Easing the unit's hatch open, Josh looked around the room, checking for signs of entry. Seeing none, his eyes went to the clock and stopped.
He had been in the med unit for three weeks, he hadn't thought that the damage was that extensive on his first observation. Well, at least he has a purpose to survive now, if only to hunt down that little red beast that had tried to eat him

Chaketo Chirapa was podcasting about the simple things in life, all from his alien perspective. He started out small, not letting much slip out, afraid of being found out, both by his own people and by The Humans. As his listenership grew, his desire to have The Humans trust his little alcove of 118 migrating Chirapa grew even stronger, and he found his voice as a podcaster, a voice pleading for sanctuary, and people listened as his podcast became increasingly popular, and he was mistakenly recognized as a rising and ground breaking voice in fiction by both Sigler and Hutchins.

With the object it in my hand The Voice in my head said "It's Right"But I knew that it wasn't right.
Again The Voice said, "It's right and you know it"
No, it can't be right, it just can't, as far back as my grade school days
I knew it wasn't right, but then maybe the voice was correct.
The voice said, "now you're coming around to my way of thinking, it's right"
Well, no hurt in trying.
Right 15,
now to the left past 15 to 35,
back right, back to 24,
With a click, the lock opened.

Long, thin fingers held the card to the light.A green stroke ran down the middle of the white card. He passed it to the heavyset man on his right and said, "One for Richardson."
He held the next card and saw a yellow stroke. He passed it to the pinched-looking man on his left. The pinched-looking man traced a blue marker over the yellow. He returned the card to the center man, who held it to the light to look at the green mark.
"One for Richardson," he said, smiling. The Voice of the People would be heard again.

Alan felt the 15-foot tall papier mache wizard head begin to tip dangerously. Everything had gone so well at dress rehearsal. He'd spent hours learning to manipulate the rods and strings that controlled the wizard's eyes and mouth while speaking his lines into a mic. The mic was the best part: a special filter gave him The Voice - deep, resonant and superbly wizardy. But now it was opening night of The Wizard of Oz. The Redmond High School theatre was filled to capacity and disaster loomed. The head teetered precariously. Munchkins scrambled for cover."OH CRAP!" the voice boomed.

âHey! It's about time you made your way back.â A familiar voice jarred Eddie back. Blinking rapidly, Eddie tried to get his bearings, remembering where he was. Eddie was... almost... but not quite... dead. Always slipping between life and death, and back again. He preferred death over life. The voice kept calling him back, refusing to let him rest in peace. Every time he thinks he's finally made it, his mother's voice calls him. He would kill her, but he listened to her enough on this side of existence. He just could not think of listening to her for eternity.

Today is my day, you must pick me! No no pick me You both went last time You know you want to pick me Donât pick her; we canât handle another day like that. That voice, that terrible, horrible voice. I have heard it ever since I came to this place. Strange creatures with odd, legs, come here and some sort of spawn comes from them. I am forced to help them carry their strange, bulky things for them. The voice is always speaking to me, driving me mad. Above, in the skies, those, things, are always there, screaming their blasphemous cries into the atmosphere. I cannot take it any more, the voice, it is driving me to madness! The voice, there it is... "The white zone is for loading and unloading passengers only."
PLANET Z
The voice.I wish I had never heard it.
And yet, now that I've heard it, I need it.
Nobody believes that I heard the voice.
They think I'm crazy.
But I'm not.
I heard it.
And it was beautiful.
Once you hear such a voice, everything else is noise. Ugly. Revolting.
That's why I did what I did, and if you try to put me through the surgery to repair my ears, I'll just drill deeper.
Now, everything's quiet.
I think I like it that way.
And I'm ready to hear the voice when it speaks to me again.
Open Question: Child support issues...
Hey everyone.well heres the situation. My bf of a year has two kids from two previous realtionships. He has a 5 year old and a 1 year old.He has not contact with the one year old and he is on child support. He was in jail at the time of the whole court issues. As for the 5year old we pick him up every other weekend . She moved to chula vista from the oc were we live to free load of her dad. we drive over two hours every other weekend.to get him and two hours back. so total of 8 hours in a weekend he spends at least 125.00 on gas round trip a totaol of 250-300 a month . His mother is making it hard for my bf to be part of his life. He can only do so much to help her money wise she wants more then he can give her he gives her 200.00 a month plus buys the baby clothes and all the things he needs she wants 500.00 plus to pay for everything else and right now it is hard and she threatens to not let him see his son.So he has decided that he rather go through the courts to det up child support and vistation. And he also wants to do the same for his daughter. which i support him 100% I just dont know were to get started. He has not had a stable job. And just started one that i think he is gonna stay for a while. Where do i start to help him figure all this out. That way later on it wont be so complicated. Are there any pro bono lawyers he can talk to . I live in orange county california if that helps. Some one please help were do i get startes
Open Question: Nervous before going...
Hey, just wondered, I'm moving into the halls at my new uni on Sunday (it's 2 hours from home) and I'm starting to get quite nervous! I just feel quite anxious and I've got a sort of knotty feeling in my stomach, which makes me feel less hungry than normal, and stops me sleeping as well as usual (though it's not insomnia or anything, it's not that bad)Is this normal? I know it's common to be nervous before going to uni, but am i reacting too badly?
Open Question: Why, oh why, do women...
No I'm not talking about cooking. I'm talking about why do women take forever to forgive a man when he makes a mistake. If presented with a problem or inconvenience, a man will typically feel disappointment, but quickly get over this, accept it, adapt, and move on with the situation. In general, Men seem to forgive much more quickly. It utterly confuses me why women sulk and stew over when things don't go their way, or when they are disappointed. Sometimes it can take hours or days for a woman to accept it, adapt, (possibly forgive), and then get back to "normalcy".Any ideas why this is?
Open Question: what kind of society...
All my neighbors are shameless hippies. or something real mean. I asked them to please allow their children to be part of Halloween live massacre scene, now through Halloween night and They refused. There are 100's of children in this world and you would think people who had like 2 or three would not care to share a neighbor. This whole scene could get me a front page story in one of the largest papers in our town which has a circulation of 2,000 or more people. We are talking important crap. Why are people so selfish, they have live nativity scenes and all I want is a chance to prove myself that I can to endure the long cold hours of standing outside slashing and beating small children for entertainment purposes. Is this too much to ask?
MUD HOUR EPISODE #41 - Jul 22,2008

âThe Future of Civilization is...
Former Vice President Al Gore delivered a major speech Thursday on US energy policy in which he challenged all Americans to confront the crisis head on and wean itself off fossil fuels in the next 10 years.
There are times in the history of our nation when our very way of life depends upon dispelling illusions and awakening to the challenge of a present danger. In such moments, we are called upon to move quickly and boldly to shake off complacency, throw aside old habits and rise, clear-eyed and alert, to the necessity of big changes. Those who, for whatever reason, refuse to do their part must either be persuaded to join the effort or asked to step aside. This is such a moment.
“Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years. This goal is achievable, affordable and transformative. It represents a challenge to all Americans â in every walk of life: to our political leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, engineers, and to every citizen.”
Senator Obama responds:
âFor decades, Al Gore has challenged the skeptics in Washington on climate change and awakened the conscience of a nation to the urgency of this threat. I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy like solar power, wind power and advanced biofuels, and those are the investments I will make as President. Itâs a strategy that will create millions of new jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced, and one that will leave our children a world that is cleaner and safer.â

Ladies and gentlemen:
There are times in the history of our nation when our very way of life depends upon dispelling illusions and awakening to the challenge of a present danger. In such moments, we are called upon to move quickly and boldly to shake off complacency, throw aside old habits and rise, clear-eyed and alert, to the necessity of big changes. Those who, for whatever reason, refuse to do their part must either be persuaded to join the effort or asked to step aside. This is such a moment.
The survival of the United States of America as we know it is at risk. And even more â if more should be required â the future of human civilization is at stake. I don’t remember a time in our country when so many things seemed to be going so wrong simultaneously. Our economy is in terrible shape and getting worse, gasoline prices are increasing dramatically, and so are electricity rates. Jobs are being outsourced. Home mortgages are in trouble. Banks, automobile companies and other institutions we depend upon are under growing pressure. Distinguished senior business leaders are telling us that this is just the beginning unless we find the courage to make some major changes quickly.
The climate crisis, in particular, is getting a lot worse â much more quickly than predicted. Scientists with access to data from Navy submarines traversing underneath the North polar ice cap have warned that there is now a 75 percent chance that within five years the entire ice cap will completely disappear during the summer months. This will further increase the melting pressure on Greenland. According to experts, the Jakobshavn glacier, one of Greenland’s largest, is moving at a faster rate than ever before, losing 20 million tons of ice every day, equivalent to the amount of water used every year by the residents of New York City.
Two major studies from military intelligence experts have warned our leaders about the dangerous national security implications of the climate crisis, including the possibility of hundreds of millions of climate refugees destabilizing nations around the world. Just two days ago, 27 senior statesmen and retired military leaders warned of the national security threat from an “energy tsunami” that would be triggered by a loss of our access to foreign oil. Meanwhile, the war in Iraq continues, and now the war in Afghanistan appears to be getting worse.
And by the way, our weather sure is getting strange, isn’t it? There seem to be more tornadoes than in living memory, longer droughts, bigger downpours and record floods. Unprecedented fires are burning in California and elsewhere in the American West. Higher temperatures lead to drier vegetation that makes kindling for mega-fires of the kind that have been raging in Canada, Greece, Russia, China, South America, Australia and Africa. Scientists in the Department of Geophysics and Planetary Science at Tel Aviv University tell us that for every one degree increase in temperature, lightning strikes will go up another 10 percent. And it is lightning, after all, that is principally responsible for igniting the conflagration in California today. Like a lot of people, it seems to me that all these problems are bigger than any of the solutions that have thus far been proposed for them, and that’s been worrying me. I’m convinced that one reason we’ve seemed paralyzed in the face of these crises is our tendency to offer old solutions to each crisis separately â without taking the others into
account. And these outdated proposals have not only been ineffective â they almost always make the other crises even worse.Yet when we look at all three of these seemingly intractable challenges at the same time, we can see the common thread running through them, deeply ironic in its simplicity: our dangerous over-reliance on carbon-based fuels is at the core of all three of these challenges â the economic, environmental and national security crises. We’re borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways
that destroy the planet. Every bit of that’s got to change. But if we grab hold of that common thread and pull it hard, all of these complex problems begin to unravel and we will find that we’re holding the answer to all of them right in our hand. The answer is to end our reliance on carbon-based fuels. In my search for genuinely effective answers to the climate crisis, I have held a series of “solutions summits” with engineers, scientists, and CEOs. In those discussions, one thing has become abundantly clear: when you connect the dots, it turns out that the real
solutions to the climate crisis are the very same measures needed to renew our economy and escape the trap of ever-rising energy prices. Moreover, they are also the very same solutions we need to guarantee our national security without having to go to war in the Persian Gulf. What if we could use fuels that are not expensive, don’t cause pollution and are abundantly available right here at home? We have such fuels. Scientists have confirmed that enough solar energy falls on the surface of the earth every 40 minutes to meet 100 percent of the entire world’s energy needs for a full year. Tapping just a small portion of this solar energy could provide all of the electricity America uses. And enough wind power blows through the Midwest corridor every day to also meet 100 percent of US electricity demand. Geothermal energy, similarly, is capable of providing enormous supplies of electricity for America.
The quickest, cheapest and best way to start using all this renewable energy is in the production of electricity. In fact, we can start right now using solar power, wind power and geothermal power to make electricity for our homes and businesses. But to make this exciting potential a reality, and truly solve our nation’s problems, we need a new start.
That’s why I’m proposing today a strategic initiative designed to free us from the crises that are holding us down and to regain control of our own destiny. It’s not the only thing we need to do. But this strategic challenge is the lynchpin of a bold new strategy needed to re-power America.
Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years. This goal is achievable, affordable and transformative. It represents a challenge to all Americans â in every walk of life: to our political leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, engineers, and to every citizen.
A few years ago, it would not have been possible to issue such a challenge. But here’s what’s changed: the sharp cost reductions now beginning to take place in solar, wind, and geothermal power â coupled with the recent dramatic price increases for oil and coal â have radically changed the economics of energy.
When I first went to Congress 32 years ago, I listened to experts testify that if oil ever got to $35 a barrel, then renewable sources of energy would become competitive. Well, today, the price of oil is over $135 per barrel. And sure enough, billions of dollars of new investment are flowing into the development of concentrated solar thermal, photovoltaics, windmills, geothermal plants, and a variety of ingenious new ways to improve our efficiency and conserve presently wasted energy.
And as the demand for renewable energy grows, the costs will continue to fall. Let me give you one revealing example: the price of the specialized silicon used to make solar cells was recently as high as $300 per kilogram. But the newest contracts have prices as low as $50 a kilogram.
You know, the same thing happened with computer chips â also made out of silicon. The price paid for the same performance came down by 50 percent every 18 months â year after year, and that’s what’s happened for 40 years in a row. To those who argue that we do not yet have the technology to accomplish these results
with renewable energy: I ask them to come with me to meet the entrepreneurs who will drive this revolution. I’ve seen what they are doing and I have no doubt that we can meet this challenge. To those who say the costs are still too high: I ask them to consider whether the costs of oil and coal will ever stop increasing if we keep relying on quickly depleting energy sources to feed a rapidly growing demand all around the world. When demand for oil and coal increases, their price goes up. When demand for solar cells increases, the price often comes down.
When we send money to foreign countries to buy nearly 70 percent of the oil we use every day, they build new skyscrapers and we lose jobs. When we spend that money building solar arrays and windmills, we build competitive industries and gain jobs here at home.
Of course there are those who will tell us this can’t be done. Some of the voices we hear are the defenders of the status quo â the ones with a vested interest in perpetuating the current system, no matter how high a price the rest of us will have to pay. But even those who reap the profits of the carbon age have to recognize the inevitability of its demise. As one OPEC oil minister observed, “The Stone Age didn’t end because of a shortage of stones.”
To those who say 10 years is not enough time, I respectfully ask them to consider what the world’s scientists are telling us about the risks we face if we don’t act in 10 years. The leading experts predict that we have less than 10 years to make dramatic changes in our global warming pollution lest we lose our ability to ever recover from this environmental crisis. When the use of oil and coal goes up, pollution goes up. When the use of solar, wind and geothermal increases, pollution comes down.
To those who say the challenge is not politically viable: I suggest they go before the American people and try to defend the status quo. Then bear witness to the people’s appetite for change. I for one do not believe our country can withstand 10 more years of the status quo. Our families cannot stand 10 more years of gas price increases. Our workers cannot stand 10 more years of job losses and outsourcing of factories. Our economy cannot stand 10 more years of sending $2 billion every 24 hours to foreign countries for oil. And our soldiers
and their families cannot take another 10 years of repeated troop deployments to dangerous regions that just happen to have large oil supplies. What could we do instead for the next 10 years? What should we do during the next 10 years? Some of our greatest accomplishments as a nation have resulted from commitments to reach a goal that fell well beyond the next election: the Marshall Plan, Social Security, the interstate highway system. But a political promise to do something 40 years from now is universally ignored because everyone knows that it’s meaningless.
Ten years is about the maximum time that we as a nation can hold a steady aim and hit our target. When President John F. Kennedy challenged our nation to land a man on the moon and bring him back safely in 10 years, many people doubted we could accomplish that goal. But 8 years and 2 months later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon.
To be sure, reaching the goal of 100 percent renewable and truly clean electricity within 10 years will require us to overcome many obstacles. At present, for example, we do not have a unified national grid that is sufficiently advanced to link the areas where the sun shines and the wind blows to the cities in the East and the West that need the electricity.
Our national electric grid is critical infrastructure, as vital to the health and security of our economy as our highways and telecommunication networks. Today, our grids are antiquated, fragile, and vulnerable to cascading failure. Power outages and defects in the current grid system cost US businesses more than $120 billion dollars a year. It has to be upgraded anyway.
We could further increase the value and efficiency of a Unified National Grid by helping our struggling auto giants switch to the manufacture of plug-in electric cars. An electric vehicle fleet would sharply reduce the cost of driving a car, reduce pollution, and increase the flexibility of our electricity grid. At the same time, of course, we need to greatly improve our commitment to efficiency and conservation. That’s the best investment we can make.
America’s transition to renewable energy sources must also include adequate provisions to assist those Americans who would unfairly face hardship. For example, we must recognize those who have toiled in dangerous conditions to bring us our present energy supply. We should guarantee good jobs in the fresh air and sunshine for any coal miner displaced by impacts on the coal industry. Every single one of them.
Of course, we could and should speed up this transition by insisting that the price of carbon-based energy include the costs of the environmental damage it causes. I have long supported a sharp reduction in payroll taxes with the difference made up in CO2 taxes. We should tax what we burn, not what we earn. This is the single most important policy change we can make.
In order to foster international cooperation, it is also essential that the United States rejoin the global community and lead efforts to secure an international treaty at Copenhagen in December of next year that includes a cap on CO2 emissions and a global partnership that recognizes the necessity of addressing the threats of extreme poverty and disease as part of the world’s agenda for solving the climate crisis.
Of course the greatest obstacle to meeting the challenge of 100 percent renewable electricity in 10 years may be the deep dysfunction of our politics and our self-governing system as it exists today. In recent years, our politics has tended toward incremental proposals made up of small policies designed to avoid offending special interests, alternating with occasional baby steps in the right direction. Our democracy has become
sclerotic at a time when these crises require boldness. It is only a truly dysfunctional system that would buy into the perverse logic that the short-term answer to high gasoline prices is drilling for more oil ten years from now.Am I the only one who finds it strange that our government so often adopts a so-called solution that has absolutely nothing to do with the problem it is supposed to address? When people rightly complain about higher gasoline prices, we propose to give more money to the oil companies and pretend that they’re going to bring gasoline prices down.
It will do nothing of the sort, and everyone knows it. If we keep going back to the same policies that have never ever worked in the past and have served only to produce the highest gasoline prices in history alongside the greatest oil company profits in history, nobody should be surprised if we get the same result over and over again. But the Congress may be poised to move in that direction anyway because some of them are being stampeded by lobbyists for special interests that know how to make the system work for them instead of the American people.
If you want to know the truth about gasoline prices, here it is: the exploding demand for oil, especially in places like China, is overwhelming the rate of new discoveries by so much that oil prices are almost certain to continue upward over time no matter what the oil companies promise. And politicians cannot bring gasoline prices down in the short term.
However, there actually is one extremely effective way to bring the costs of driving a car way down within a few short years. The way to bring gas prices down is to end our dependence on oil and use the renewable sources that can give us the equivalent of $1 per gallon gasoline.
Many Americans have begun to wonder whether or not we’ve simply lost our appetite for bold policy solutions. And folks who claim to know how our system works these days have told us we might as well forget about our political system doing anything bold, especially if it is contrary to the wishes of special interests. And I’ve got to admit, that sure seems to be the way things have been going. But I’ve begun to hear different voices in this country from people who are not only tired of baby steps and special interest
politics, but are hungry for a new, different and bold approach. We are on the eve of a presidential election. We are in the midst of an international climate treaty process that will conclude its work before the end of the first year of the new president’s term. It is a great error to say that the United States must wait for others to join us in this matter. In fact, we must move first, because that is the key to getting others to follow; and because moving first is in our own national interest.
So I ask you to join with me to call on every candidate, at every level, to accept this challenge â for America to be running on 100 percent zero-carbon electricity in 10 years. It’s time for us to move beyond empty rhetoric. We need to act now.
This is a generational moment. A moment when we decide our own path and our collective fate. I’m asking you â each of you â to join me and build this future. Please join the WE campaign at wecansolveit.org. We need you. And we need you now. We’re committed to changing not just light bulbs, but laws. And laws will only change with leadership.
On July 16, 1969, the United States of America was finally ready to meet President Kennedy’s challenge of landing Americans on the moon. I will never forget standing beside my father a few miles from the launch site, waiting for the giant Saturn 5 rocket to lift Apollo 11 into the sky. I was a young man, 21 years old, who had graduated from college a month before and was enlisting in the United States Army three weeks later.
I will never forget the inspiration of those minutes. The power and the vibration of the giant rocket’s engines shook my entire body. As I watched the rocket rise, slowly at first and then with great speed, the sound was deafening. We craned our necks to follow its path until we were looking straight up into the air. And then four days later, I watched along with hundreds of millions of others around the world as Neil Armstrong took one
small step to the surface of the moon and changed the history of the human race.We must now lift our nation to reach another goal that will change history. Our entire civilization depends upon us now embarking on a new journey of exploration and discovery. Our success depends on our willingness as a people to undertake this journey and to complete it within 10 years. Once again, we have an opportunity to take a giant leap for humankind.

Open Question: Is wrinkled skin after...
I was even tempted to apply a firming/toning lotion on him but I'm not sure if thats a good idea or maybe it is?When I take a bath, only my hands and toes get wrinkled, and they only stay that way for a couple minutes. Any ideas?
Open Question: Aircraft with...
What's the highest total time (time that the engine on an airplane has been running) that you've ever heard of an aircraft getting?I remember once I read (think it was an AOPA magazine) about a Cessna 172 that had total of 19,000 hours on it! I don't know if it still had its original engine or not, and I don't know if it's still flying today because it's been a few years since I read it. I remember seeing a picture of it, it was a green and white C172. Other than this, I've never seen an airplane roll over to 10,000, much less get close to almost 20,000! What's the highest you've ever heard of?
