http://www.newyorker.com/talk/financial/2008/05/26/080526ta_talk_surowieckiThe Financial PageThe Free-Trade Paradoxby James Surowiecki May 26, 2008 …when it comes to free trade, which both Obama and Clinton have lambasted over the past few months. At times, the campaign has looked like a contest over who hates free trade more: Obama has argued that free-trade agreements like NAFTA are bought and paid for by special interests, while Clinton has emphasized the need to “stand up” to countries like China. Two weeks ago, both senators signed on as sponsors of a new bill that would effectively impose higher tariffs on China if it doesn’t revalue its currency.…free trade with poorer countries has a huge positive impact on the buying power of middle- and lower-income consumers—a much bigger impact than it does on the buying power of wealthier consumers. The less you make, the bigger the percentage of your spending that goes to manufactured goods—clothes, shoes, and the like—whose prices are often directly affected by free trade. The wealthier you are, the more you tend to spend on services—education, leisure, and so on—that are less subject to competition from abroad. In a recent paper on the effect of trade with China, the University of Chicago economists Christian Broda and John Romalis estimate that poor Americans devote around forty per cent more of their spending to “non-durable goods” than rich Americans do. That means that lower-income Americans get a much bigger benefit from the lower prices that trade with China has brought.

Its a pretty basic question. If the economy is in a recession and the government decides to implement an expansionary fiscal policy, itd desired effect is to move AD to full employment (equilibrium). However there are two shortcomings to expansionary fiscal policy. "Crowding Out" occurs and interest rates get higher. When interest rates get higher in America, people will find America an attractive place in which to make financial investments and we would draw capital flows into the economy. So our currency becomes stronger, and we start importing more than we export, because of cheap foreign goods. Now here's my question. Why does AD fall short of full-employment (other than the crowding out effect) we demand more except its not from domestic producers. Is that why? We're not demanding from domestic producers.

Finance Minister has approved and it comes to immediate effect from 1st April 2008 which is after the financial period month of March 31. This is the result when Lebanon Central Bank decided to peg its currency to Euros ending decades of dependency to US Dollars. Everyday and everywhere we hear people and their politicians complain about the price of gasoline and the fact that oil companies are making record high prices, but, are the corporations really to blame?Have we forgotten two of the most fundamental principles of economics: 1- An increase in demand yields and increase in prices and 2- the goal of the firm is to maximize profits? If you think about it, we're largely responsible. We drive big vehicles, live in large suburban homes far away from not only work, but an organized traffic system, and we drive very inefficiently. Sure you can blame this on China and India, but prices weren't much lower 2 years ago if you factor in inflation (which weakens the currency effect as well). So if we knew back then that prices were high, why does it take two years or $0.25 more a gallon to get it through our heads?I can't understand how oil companies are being evil when we have a lust for gas guzzlers and inefficient lifestyles. Can you provide me a link on the speculation report? I would agree that it is a major factor in influencing prices, but I can't see how demand hasn't risen significantly enough since 2005.

But on the other side, if they have alot of index linked gilts then won't work. ok, is this why? if deflation, the government can print more money out of thin air and repay the loan without having inflation? Thanks

My understanding of the open market operations is that Central Banks buy and sell "financial instruments" (gold, bond, currency etc.) to banks increasing and decreasing the amounts of money in their reserve accounts.1.)My first question is how does this increase or decrease in reserve funds changes or effects the fed fund rate (that is how does an increase in funds = a lower rate). Does more funds to lend result in funds being lent at lower rates?2.)Why don't banks simply trade these securities on the open market rather than with the fed (which effects the money supply ). Wouldn't this effect the interest rate in the same way?3.)Am I completely wrong about how the system works if so please explain.

If you buy oil puts, it will force the oil companies margins to narrow and that will automatically cause them to hedge worldwide to protect those margins on the downside. The effects will be that the futures will bring down the cash markets worldwide, the bond will rally and the stock markets will roar and the the rest of the world will start to buy dollars again and not sell them as they will start to buy our bonds and sell their own bonds and currencies. We want to effect the put call ratio and shake-up the margins worldwide. I know it works because it was done dutring the Gulf War. This will also force America to stop printing dollars and start buying dollars instead.

Resolved Question: A possible...
If I happen to be holding many thousands of another currency, such as Euro, when the dollar takes a plunge I will profit greatly as an American. Do banks have any failsafes to prevent customers from repaying debts when the dollar is unusually low? For example, let's say that 6 months from now the value of the dollar falls 25% below what it is today compared to the Euro. If I were to invest $20,000 (roughly equal to my current debt) in Euros today, could I in effect save 25% on my loans by repaying them during the value decline?

Resolved Question: International...
I submitted the same question about an hour ago. However, after more research I have altered it slightly. My previous theory was that International adoption is bad for America in general. I still believe this to be true (please note the IN GENERAL part). However, I have changed my supporting facts. Instead of just angling for the bad effect on the economy, I am going to look at how some bad experiences with International adoption affect future domestic adoptions. How the econmy is affected due to population increases and how currency goes out but doesn't come back in. As well as how America is viewed as taking advantage of a poor situation in less developed countries (meaning, why take one child for thousands of dollars rather then spend that thousands of dollars helping several children in that country?)Anyways, I need some sources, and please don't get upset because of my opinion on the matter. It is my right to express my opinion.Sources; books, articles, DVDs, etc.Thank you for giving me both sides, I may use the Madonna story in my essay. :) I appreciate your answerWell, thank you for the idea. :)I am very glad your adoption worked out!I appreciate those of you who stated your opinions against mine, but in a nice way.As for the others, you really do need to stop spending all your time trying to knock down someones opinions. Most of you stated the same points and I will point out my points that relate to this.It is very odd that most of you think children in other countries have lives so horrible but that children here don't. It is true that throughout the world orphans are treated badly. However, it is just as likely that an orphan here is raped, abused, and killed as it is for an orphan in another country.Another point is that a lot of children that are adopted internationally are stolen from their families in order for people to make a profit off them. It is also extremely possible for "businesses" that help people adopt children from their country, to steal your money and run. While in the U.S. there is a much longer wait time for your child, you know that you aren't supporting crime. As a side note, some of you assume that I am saying you should have biological children and not adopt. I never said that, and I will have you know that I WONT have biological children. I have always known that. I plan to adopt children domestically when I am of the right age and financial stability.I just believe we should help clean up our country before we butt into another countries affairs. Such as in the Iraq war, which was an awful decision. We can NOT "help" another country before we can manage to clean up our own.
