The North Pole Melt Has Begun

August 26, 2008
posted by admin

Rowan has noted, with some angst, the passing of a bill to create a coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the National Aeronautic and Space Adminsitration (NASA). Well, it seems that a lot was going on 50 years ago.

Another commemorative piece of legislation, H.RES.1067, introduced by Representative Joe Courtney, marks the 50th anniversary of the USS Nautilus, a submarine that was the first ocean-going craft to cross the North Pole.

An irony that was not noted in H.RES.1067 is that this year, a boat might be able to cross the North Pole without going beneath the ice. The North Pole is expected to become ice-free for the first time in historical memory.

Today’s update by the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (ARCUS) describes “a continuation of dramatic sea ice loss.” How dramatic? Well, some models suggest that the loss will be less dramatic than what occurred last year. Other models suggest that the loss of ice will be more dramatic. We’ll have to wait and see.

Photographs from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that the melt at the North Pole has already begun, however. The following picture was taken just a few hours ago. The water it shows is coming from melt that’s taking place from the top. How long before it reaches all the way down to the water below? I’ll keep an eye on the melt’s expansion.

In the meantime, here’s a movie of the North Pole - created by NOAA from a series of photographs taken by another camera at the North Pole between April and June 4th. Sorry, no Santa Claus.

FNS: Lie-berman Shills For McCain

August 25, 2008

Ah…Holy Joe Lieberman.  As reliable as the proverbial broken clock, and just as correct.  On FOXNews Sunday, Joe Lieberman played coy on whether he would pull a Zell Miller and appear at the Republican National Convention.

WALLACE:  If you’re asked, will you?

LIEBERMAN:  If John asks me, and he thinks I can help him, because I believe this is no ordinary time, no ordinary election, John McCain is no ordinary candidate.  I want to help him.  I’m not going to go to attack Barack Obama.  I’m going to go to explain why I as an Independent Democrat am supporting John McCain, hoping that I can convince other Independents and Democrats to join me in choosing the man who is clearly more ready to be the President America needs today.

Okay, whatever, Joe.  I hear words coming out of your mouth, but what do they mean?  Independent Democrat?  No ordinary election?  More ready to be President?  That America needs today?   Meaningless platitudes, Lie-berman.  But none so meaningless as that statement “I’m not going to attack Barack Obama” because it takes nothing for you to start spouting off those RNC-crafted talking points to attack Obama.

video_wmv Download | Play   video_mp4 Download | Play

LIEBERMAN: If Barack Obama’s policy in Iraq had been implemented, he couldn’t be able to be in Iraq today. It’s because he was prepared to accept “retreat and defeat” and that would mean today, al Qaeda would be in charge of parts of Iraq, Iranian-backed extremists would be in charge of other parts of Iraq, there’d be civil war and maybe even genocide. And the fact is, we’re winning in Iraq today. And you know, you can’t choose as Sen. Obama seems to think, to lose in Iraq so you can win in Afghanistan. The reality is if we lost in Iraq-which Obama was prepared to do-we would go to Afghanistan as losers and instead, al Qaeda has its tail tucked between its legs as it’s exiting Iraq to go to try to [crosstalk-unintelligible] into Afghanistan.

What color is the sky in your world, Joe?  Because I’m pretty sure you’re talking from some parallel reality.  If Barack Obama’s initial policy in Iraq (opposing invasion) would have been implemented, we wouldn’t have gone into Iraq at all.  His current policy of a measured withdrawal is the one favored by the Iraqi government.  So are you saying that listening to the democratic government we propped up helped establish is “retreat and defeat”?  And I don’t know how to break this to you, Joe, but if we hadn’t gone into Iraq, there’d be no opportunity for al Qaeda to establish any foothold in Iraq, much less control a section of it.  And the Iranian-backed sector?  They’re called the Shi’a.  They’re the ones in charge now that we got rid of the more secular Sunni government of Saddam Hussein, you freakin’ idiot.  Not to mention there IS a civil war and with more than a million Iraqis dead and 3 million refugees, I’d say there’s a genocide going on as well.

But this is what Joe Lieberman thinks is “winning” in Iraq and sending al Qaeda running with “its tail between its legs.”  Riiigggghtt.

Don’t miss where Evan Bayh rightfully shoots down these BizarroWorld talking points with a little injection of reality and both Lieberman and Wallace race to interrrupt and shut him down.  Can’t let those Fox viewers be informed.

Transcripts below the fold:

Clip 1:

WALLACE: Real quickly, are you going to speak at the Republican Convention?

LIEBERMAN: Uh, I don’t know yet.

WALLACE: Even if that means the Senate Democrats would kick you out of their caucus?

LIEBERMAN: Well, I’m following the model of John McCain. I’m going to do what I think is right for the country and not worry about the politics and John McCain is definitely right for the country as our next President.

Clip 2:

BAYH: I have to respond to that. Barack Obama was not for “losing” in Iraq. Barack didn’t want the war to begin with. John McCain opposed surging troops in Afghanistan till last week. [Lieberman interrupts] Joe, excuse me. Was John for losing in Afghanistan? I don’t think so. And now you have Maliki, even President Bush, are moving towards Barack Obama’s position. His judgment [crosstalk] was right…

WALLACE: Gentleman, I want to…we could continue this…

LIEBERMAN: Bottom line, no question Barack Obama was prepared to lose in Iraq. [crosstalk]

BAYH: That’s not true…

LIEBERMAN: Whether it was right or wrong…

WALLACE: Gentleman, you’re going to have to agree to disagree. I want to move on to the whole issue of his trip this week…

brett favre.jpgFavre 'Unretirement' Proves a Headache for Daily Paper (E&P)
For the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the ongoing battle between Brett Favre and Packer management has been both a blessing and a curse. Since news broke that Favre had changed his mind and wanted to come back for another season, the daily has seen a boost in web traffic, reader comments, and single-copy sales. But the paper's sales of retirement-related merchandise that began in March when Favre tearfully announced his departure after 16 seasons has all but ground to a halt.

ABC News, WaPo Withheld Results of Poll (Media Matters)
ABC News and the Washington Post issued staggered releases of the results of their latest poll, withholding from their first release results favorable to Sen. Barack Obama, including the finding that 50 percent of registered voters would vote for Obama for president versus 42 percent for Sen. John McCain.

That Old Lady in Dubuque Gets the New Yorker's Cover (NYT)
When The New Yorker came into being in the 1920s its founder, Harold Ross, held up Dubuque as the sort of backwater he wanted nothing to do with. Ross, with Eustace Tilley nose in the air, said the magazine would not be "edited for the old lady in Dubuque." Not surprisingly, Dubuquers thought it terribly snooty of him, not to mention unfair. But they know enough to recognize satire.

Greta Lobs Bias Charge at CNN

gretawire_7-18b.JPGFox News anchor Greta Van Susteren is blasting Netroots Nation, which calls itself a "progressive political movement," for for labeling FNC "opinion media." But Van Susteren saved much of her blog ire for CNN.

I know someone at CNN — and to protect that person's job won't identify — who said that when he/she files a story with an editor that has criticism of Senator Obama which he/she believes is factual and fair, the story criticism comes back watered down...this does not happen to the person's filed story when the criticism is of Senator Clinton or Senator McCain. This has never happened to me at Fox. No one has ever told me what to say or not. (And, as an aside, when I worked for Ted Turner at CNN, it never happened to me there, either.)

A CNN insider tells TVNewser: "Greta is a good lawyer and certainly she ought to know the difference between fact and hearsay. It's surprising she would write something as preposterous as this is."

Van Susteren also had a parting shot for MSNBC: "Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann? Netroot Nations think they have not marketed their opinions? they are not 'opinion media?' Give me a break!"

WordPress Plugins and Themes News

WordPress Plugins DatabaseMark Ghosh of Weblog Tools Collection asks “How many Queries are too many?” in a WordPress blog. In summary, the issue is how many queries to the WordPress database are made by WordPress Plugins and WordPress Themes and what impact that has on the database, server load, and user experience. His experience with his popular site gives a great example and he asks you to chime in with your experiences.

Must Have WordPress 2.5 Plugins:Mashable: 20+ Must-Have WordPress 2.5 Compatible Plugins has been released with some great Plugins in their listing. However, they are a week short since WordPress 2.6 is now out. Fortunately, most WordPress 2.5 Plugins will work with the new version.

Interesting WordPress Plugins: Here are some interesting and unusual Plugins I stumbled on recently:

  • Related Posts by Categories für WordPress is in German and is a WordPress Plugin that creates related posts in the same category as the current article.
  • Tagline Rotator WordPress Plugin randomly selects a tagline from a list and displays it under your blog title.
  • Show125 WordPress Plugin by X-OR WordPress Widget is a widget that gives you more control over easily adding 125×125 pixel ads to your blog in ad blocks.
  • Duplicate Post Checker WordPress Plugin checks for duplicate content before you publish.
  • Version Creator WordPress Plugin adds your blog’s design version number, name, and note, so you can entertain or inform your visitors on which version your blog is in its development.

Finding WordPress Plugins: For more WordPress Plugins see the official WordPress Plugin Directory, the WordPress Plugins Database, and Weblog Tools Collection Plugin and Theme announcements.

Do You Say “WordPress Plugin” on Your Plugin Page? I’m finding a lot of WordPress Plugin authors are not using the word “WordPress Plugin” in their Plugin’s official page, nor within the text. Remember that “WordPress Plugin” is a popular keyword search term and if you aren’t using it, your chances of being found drops. Avoid separating the two words like “WordPress Blah Blah Plugin” and keep them together such as “Blah Blah WordPress Plugin” as the closer the terms are to each other, the more important they are. Most people search for “how to do blah WordPress Plugin” when they search, so help them find you by using the words and keeping them together. And it’s Plugin not plug-in, something you connect to electricity.

MP3: The Kid - Bloodmoon

August 19, 2008
posted by admin

Saturdays in 2008 are devoted to the music of Göteborg. This week's guest: Patrik Bengtsson from The Kid. The band's new album "Transient blood" is out now on Hybris.

First off, the standard question: how long have you lived in Gbg, what brought you there and what keeps you around?

Johan is born here and the other three of us are from Småland and moved here to exchange the rich soil and the pine trees for education and nightlife. Then we found friends and love and decided to stay. Frida moved here in 1996 and me and Maja came in 2000.

I hear a strong lineage in The Kid's music that connects it to the Gbg post-punk scene of yore, bands such as Cortex (obviously), but it's more than that. Do you think that's an extension of living in the same city or is it more predetermined? Was that the sort of thing you grew up on or did you discover it later?

Freddie Wadling is an icon, all the things he has been involved in is great such as Blue for Two, Liket Lever, Lädernunnan, Rukorna and Fläskkvartetten, the original punkscene of Gbg was great with bands like Göteborg Sound and Slobobans Undergång. We were listening to punk and post-punk long before we moved to Gbg. The Swedish post-punk scene was great, with bands like Commando M Pigg, Brända Barn and Reeperbahn. As a new Gothenburger you become proud of Gbg when you understand what this town has giving the world in forms of music and bands, but our taste in music was already formed when we all moved here.

Do you think it's important to keep that musical heritage alive?

When it comes to pop music, no.

Putting aside nostalgia for the moment, how would you say The Kid looks toward the future? Are there any current movements/scenes/happenings in Gbg (or elsewhere) worth paying attention to, whether you are personally involved or not?

We will continue struggling with the band trying to combine the sound of the early 80-ies with the sound of the new new wave/the new new romantic. Make some shows and some new songs. No big plans, just nice to have the possibility to do this and get paid for it. We've been around for a couple of years now and we are quite bored playing for stiff students. It's time for the new Gbg-scene with people in their 20ies to do the studentclub-mayhem. I think the new Gbg pop-scene is some form of an antiscene. They frown at the old Service glory days. They spit on electronic stuff like laptops and iPods, they play instruments and wear hats and love Håkan Hellström instead of The Embassy and Claes Ohlson-stroboscope. And they've got authentic good self-esteem; that's good but it's the total opposite of the classic Gbg scene.

Don't think that I'm a silly old fart, I love changes. And some of these kid are guests at my monthly 77-punk club and they know the lyrics to all the old Gbg punk songs. So the future is saved. They know their heritage.

I understand that a number of you are involved in other art projects besides The Kid- what else are you currently working on?

We are constantly working with other art(y)/music projects.

You will find a couple of them on our myspace–site under top friends. Otherwise, we are still working as Artists and Architects, and when we run out of money we take care of old people, trees and flowers. You can also visit www.mermermer.com and click on Frida Sjöstam and www.patrikbengtsson.com for some aesthetic-experience.

Would you say that Gbg is an artist-friendly city?

I'm sure that Gbg is the best music-friendly town in Sweden. All the interesting bands from the last 10 years are from Gbg. And the mood between the bands is nice and friendly.

Lastly, have you got a song from the new album that you'd like to share?

I think "Let's go kid" or "Bloodmoon" are two nice songs, you could use one of them.

My personal preference is demonstrated below...

Yahoo Slams Icahn/Microsoft Plan The drama between Microsoft and Yahoo has been taking place—in a very public way—for almost half a year now, and today Yahoo rachetted up the tension even further. In an open letter to shareholders, the company urged investors to back Yahoo's current board of directors and reject a takeover attempt from dissatisfied billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who wants to appoint his own board and lay Yahoo for sale on Microsoft's doorstep. And Yahoo's letter walks right up to the line, insinuating Icahn is all but lying to get Yahoo investors to back his plans. "The recently-formed Carl Icahn-Microsoft alliance continues to make

NBC Sells 90% of Olympic Ads (Hollywood Reporter)
With less than three weeks to the start of the Beijing Games, NBC Universal is poised to announce Monday that it has sold 90% of its Olympics ad inventory. The network reiterated that it was on track to break a record with more than $1 billion in ad sales. The network said the pace of advertising has picked up in recent weeks, thanks to its coverage of Olympics trials during weekend primetime. NYT: With the Games only 19 days away, many at NBC are concerned about how they will be permitted to cover any unscheduled events, like political protests or government crackdowns -- or whether the Chinese government will allow them to cover such things at all.
